Ok, so I like big chickens. I have three white Cornish Cross hens. I bought 4 last year about March. This year they are all big and grown up. I did not know they were meat chickens. I did seem to luck out that they were all hens.

I am worried about them now because I read that they are not meant to live this long and their weight is hard on their legs. I don't want to cull them, they are, well, 2 of them are the tamest chickens I have. Kind of love them, you know?

Alright, ok. Hmm, now I just read that Cochins are big birds. Is this true? I thought they were small like Silkies and Bantys.

Edited to add: Are they expensive?

You can get bantam cochins, but a standard Cochin is a large bird. Roosters usually get to about 11 pounds, hens about 8 1/2. The hatchery I order from charges about $3.50 for sexed chicks. that is a little more than "standard" chicks, but not what I would consider expensive. A breeder will charge more for quality or rare color varieties.

When I read that they were big birds, I looked the name up. I saw a frizzle and I think I'd like one of those. I will look on Craigslist and see if there are any local that are selling eggs. I'm still not buying them to eat, although I will have to do something with extra roosters.

Are bantam cochins a lot bigger than a regular bantam? Thanks, Sylvia
