Cochin Thread!!!

The
I absolutely adore Cochins! Gosh they are so cute, VERY smart, and such talkers! My favorite Bantam red cochin Murphy recently passed away. She was the sweetest thing and kept all of the other hens in line. She was also the perfect Mama hen.
I've also got a Giant Cochin roo named Buster, who just so happens to be blind. When he was a chick I thought he was just chill and maybe slightly neuratic, but over time we found he couldn't see! He has some perception of shadows and light, and he can sense things really well, but he still has a little trouble with confidence so he has a small pen that he lives in with his Ameracuana girlfriend Duckie. We keep his food and water in the exact same place so he always knows exactly where everything in his pen is and Duckie follows him around clucking to make him feel safe. :love

So yeah, I love Cochins!!!!

That is so sweet!!!! :)

I have 2 questions below. I bought 2 Red Frizzle Cochin chicks. I think I got a pullet and a cockerel. The one I think is a pullet is frizzling very well but the one I think is a cockerel is just growing feathers and possibly just the fluff growing out that makes him look slightly frizzled.

I was wondering if cockerels frizzle slower than pullets?

Or it is possible to get a Red Frizzle that doesn't frizzle?

I am not a cochin expert but I also ordered a red frizzle and she 6 weeks and beautiful but not a but if frizzle. I was also wondering if a non frizzled "frizzle" can have frizzled chicks?

flockofbantams, yes I have a chick that has been sick. Cotton Ball is still much smaller then the others(½ as big) but she looks like she is growing a little again and I haven't noticed that 'click' in her chest when she breaths. She will be 8 weeks old on Wednesday.

Sorry to hear about those poor chickies from the market! I hate that people treat animals that way!

I would for sure send Animal Control after them! How is Rainbow doing? That cut healing up? You could try giving her boiled egg and black oil sunflower seeds if your not already. They both have a lot of protein in them that could help her feathers grow back.
(My sister is visiting from Canada so I was having a sleepover at my moms house with her :p btw that was a lot of reading to catch up on lol.)

Can anyone make heads or tails of these? Day 22 under broody. No movement since yesterday. Vessels look empty close to air sac.On the second picturethere is a spot that looks like blood. I dont want to be hasty, but momma needs to stretch her legs. She rolledback under after I checked it. She hasnt kicked it out.no internal pip.
I know some people hatch the eggs for the chick when its having problems. Its very dangerous for the chick and you shouldn't do it unless its an EMERGENCY. If you break a blood vessel in the egg the chick can bleed to death. There are some youtube videos up on how to do it. It could be in the egg wrong but if it isn't peeping it could be possible it suffocated. Let us know what happens with the little guy. Hope it turns out ok for you >.< and gratz on your other little splash. It is SUPER cute.
