Cochin Thread!!!

LOL Why is it I can't find any large fowl/standard Cochins in my area that I can afford? All I want are 2 - 3 hens old enough to lay but not too old to produce good eggs for hatching.

It's getting to the point where it seems like the word Cochins is synonymous with BANTAM Cochins. Geesh!

It would cost me about 50 bucks to raise LF Hen to laying age. Good eggs or chicks are 4 each and up. I put almost 2.50 into electicity and bulbs per bird that makes it to grow up after all culls removed. Running the heaters all winter to keep the water thawed ads over 20 a week to my electric bill. Last year feed was through the roof due to high commodity prices. Birds are over 10 months old before they start to lay and they eat like horses when growing. Why would anyone want to sell a quality bird for 1/3 of what it cost to raise it last year. I hope you find what you want but I would not price a LF Cochin at $15 each unless there was something wrong with them.

Thanks. It is actually a very easy colour to create, all they are is a partridge base with a pure dose of the mottling gene really, but it creates a very nice effect i think.

Just to let you know, Self-blue and Lavender are the same color, just different names.

Been a while, but here is a bird from a project colour i am working on.







So far to go to improve type, and so few breeders here who have birds that can help me. Wish i was closer to all of you.

So, can i ask how you made this color or is it super secret spy stuff? lol I am interested in maybe doing this as a project, but a different breed. Tia!

I feel the same way. $15 is a very polite price for a pullet. I only have one Cochin pullet. She will be used as a "Mother Hen" to our hatchlings. Right now she is my toddler's pet. Anyway...Thanks for the heads up on the Brahmas. I have seen them at a friend's house where they forage a lot. This will be the first year that I will be raising my own. I hope that they will enjoy fodder and I do not starve them. We do not offer much feed. I may have to invest in more. If you have any other tips for me please bless me with the knowledge.

Well, I'm not trying to cheat anyone but at the same time I am not looking for show quality. We are on a fixed income and for the approximate $45 dollars I could spend on hens, I had hoped to get 3 and then produce more of my own from them. I already have a rooster, just looking for hens, I had no idea how much it would cost to raise them to breeding age.

I think if you explain your situation someone will work with you. I am not trying g to insult you, but you may want to find a more economical breed. I am certain that you know that Cochins can eat.
I am poor myself, and I know that some have not had the opportunities that I have had in my chicken raising start. I also know how hard it is to find what you want. I wish that I could have one for you and ship it.
Find out if there are any swaps or chicken meets near you. You could possible meet a breeder, work a deal, or barder.

Barter? or trade even. I have lots of stuff that I have crocheted up and just kept. There are no Chicken Swaps right now, too cold I guess.
I have been talking to my husband about checking out other breeds but I guess I did a good job of explaining why I want the Cochins because he is kind of insisting that I go ahead and get the ones I really want. I would go up a size to the Brahmas or down a size to the Orpingtons. He doesn't realize that I'm not sure I could kill and eat my Cochins. LOL Now, also, I don't know how much Brahmas or ordinary Orpingtons go for so they could be just as expensive as the Cochins I can't find. LOL

I don't have lots of money either.
I love Cochin's. So since I can't afford adult birds... And no one lives near me that breeds them. I choose to ship eggs in. I was super scared too but fig I would try. So spent the money on eggs and took the risk. I make sure who I get eggs from is no Joe shmo...I buy from nice wonderful breeders who take lots of pride in their flocks. And appreciate to have the opportunity to buy their hard work.
And now I have lots of birds from diff bloodlines and breeders. I have all sorts of type, some poor pq to now buying nice lovely bq and learning along the way.
Its something ya might want to give a try. I'm sure glad I did and continue to do.
