Cochin Thread!!!

Hi, I was hoping for some opinions on these two cockerels. I don't know very much about Cochins, but I was hoping to know if either of these guys was worth keeping to use? And to learn a little.

They are both the same age, the first guy is taller and the second guy is more compact. The pictures almost show a little purple coming through in the sheen, I've never seen it in person? Is purple sheen a bad thing in black cochins? And why does that bleed through? They came from an all black breeding pen. They are 8-9 months old!

I don't know much about breeding but I would keep the second guy and I'm pretty sure that purple is okay.... But I don't know anything so don't take my word for it

Does anyone know what I would get if I crossed a buff brahma rooster with a white cochin hen? (They're both bantams)

It would just be a mutt chicken. Very nice for a yard bird, nothing else.

I think you could get a slew of projects going from that cross. Breed the buff brahma to the white cochin and then breed their offspring together. That's when you should get a whole bunch of color varieties showing up.

I myself have a project going right now.
Got chocolate cochin bantam chicks in the brooder. 5 smooth and 1 frizzled.
Cant wait to see them mature.

Could be brahma, but I think you need a bit more direction and knowledge than just "What would you get if you breed x to y." If they're bantams you wouldn't even have a ready market for the culls, you don't look for bantams to eat or for eggs. So my projection is, you get stuck with a LOT of birds that few people want. This leaves you in the unpleasant position of deciding what to do with the unwanted birds. Are you going to keep them (costly) or kill them (undesirable). The frustrating thing I see with breeding in this way is, few folks look down the road at what's coming. Do you have a goal, what do you do with offspring, where will you house them, do you have enough money to feed them if you breed them? I have a hard enough time finding homes for my purebred (show) birds, let alone something mixed that came from a whim.

Could not agree more. Breeding is fun. I only suggest cross breeding breeds unless there is a goal and a plan. . I see it often and then get calls about would you be interested in these. I seldom have a use for them and have to decline.
