Cochin Thread!!!

My LF Blue April is now mature!!
I saw some of my free range roosters breeding her this evening. I may need to get a different rooster for her since I'm not liking what Gary has matured into so far..

I know this is a cochin thread, but for those of you who have orpingtons.

Anyone else have Orpingtons and wants to join a group dedicated to Orpingtons of Texas(And surrounding areas)?

I think that it'd be great we can also post pics of projects that we're working on, and birds we have available to sale/trade. It'd be a really fun/informative group

I just created the page so go join and add pics and information about your birds, "Orpingtons of Texas" is the name of the group.

Birdie is BEAUTIFUL. Is she a Partridge Cochin? I only got my first two Cochins (one black the other partridge) 14 weeks ago. And I'm loving them. I feel bad for them as we're having a heat wave and they are not fans. But I've got a fan on them and a big wet area for them to lay in and they are getting through it okay.

Can't wait for them to grow out and see them full grown with their fancy feathered feet.

Are Cochin's more timid than other breeds? This is my first time with Cochin's.

I got two Cochin's 14 weeks ago (one black and one partridge) and raised them myself in a brooder w/ 4 Buff Orptingons. They all get along great and for a while I thought the black Cochin was the leader of the pack. But she is sooooo timid. Anytime I coax her out from under the coop, she's immediately looking up at the sky.

Her name is Henny Penny and I'm thinking I scared her w/ that name and she thinks the sky is falling.

She seems happy otherwise and with some work, I can coax her out to the garden w/ her other brooder mates and she'll eat and dust bath. But she's soooo shy and timid. Just curious if this is how the breed is or if I got one who is just extra timid and shy.

My cochin queen Katherine is one of my most docile birds toward me, easy to handle, has been the best momma! But she is definitely not timid when it comes to the other girls! They all know their place with her. She's tiny, but she's a fireball.

She seemed to come out of her shell two days ago. And then yesterday was as timid as can be again.

I'll just give her time to grow and come into herself and we'll see where she ends up on the pecking order.

She sure is beautiful. I swear the Cochins prance around on those fancy feathered feet. Much more so than my other hens w/ out feathered feet.

Looking for opinions on whether you prefer a darker or lighter colored blue cochin

I personally like the darker blues better in the cochins.

I have lavender orpingtons and am hatching self-blue/lavender OEGBs, so I am partial to the blues/lavenders in general, but in the cochins, I think the darker blues are gorgeous-est!
