Hi Cochin lovers! I just got a mixed flock for my backyard coop. It's my first time with Cochins, I have a standard and a blue. My little blue is so cute but she is noticibly not growing as fast as the rest of the flock. It's only been 6 days but I'm worried about her! She's also much more calm and independent than the rest of them...is this normal or should I just prepare myself that she may not make it?

My guess is that she is ok, is your blue a bantam? If so then she will be smaller than the rest by nature. Unless she is showing signs of sickness then there should be nothing to be worried about, do you have a pic? Also are they chicks or are they already grown?

One of my Cochins started out tiny compared to her "sister" and even when compared to the lighter breeds in the brooder. She caught up and now she is a big, beautiful blue. If you're not observing any health issues and/or she isn't a bantam, she should be fine. Just a late bloomer. Keep an eye on her to make sure she is drinking and eating her share and not bullied out of her food and water.

I agree with @FeatherMtnFarms and @poodlechicks if your baby is acting normal...eating, drinking and pooping then I wouldn't worry! And she may be a Bantam!

KellyJo79 I have a fairly small hen (black mottled bantam) that I bought 2 years ago and she has stayed much smaller than the rest of the girls I got at the same time. Even though she is smaller, she is my best layer in the group. She is put together very well, just smaller than my other bantams. And with my blue roo, she has never hatched a chick that was any different than everyone else. She just has a smaller frame, but she is queen of the nest box every morning and is the loudest to let everyone know she has laid her egg for the day. LOL I hope your little hen is ok and she works out as well as mine did. I feel very blessed that all my cochins are very nice birds, even my roo. He waits until they are all out of sight and then he wants his morning comb rub.

Then he joins his ladies in the tractor.

Up date on my birds!

I've been so busy lately.. I've only got about an hour and 15 minutes of time for lately. And I use that time for showering, eating, and stuff in the house.
I kind of feel bad for the cochins right now, there is no reason for the 2 blacks and 2 blues to be locked up excpet for them to not get sun bleached for the blues and for all of them to not get best up by a rooster or mean hen. Good thing the eggs are 1/3 the way though tomorrow, and as soon as the black cockerel is sexually mature I am having him over all the hens and hatching those eggs. Hopefully he becomes mature by time May so the chicks are 1 year by time fairs next year.
