Cochin Thread!!!

I just got two black giant cochin chicks about a month ago. They are five weeks old, and I love them so much!!! Their names are Biff and Bertha. It may be to early to tell, but does anyone think they are show quality? Here is a picture.

No they are not SQ, the biggest thing you can tell at this age is that they have blue feet and a blue beak

My happy crew! Sheldon, Bernadette, and Leona (the white) new to us and hopefully accepting of the 10 browns we should be getting here in a week (fingers crossed the long quarantine/introduction plan works!)

i usually just toss new ones in with some feed. there's a few fights the first day and as long as no one bleeds i let them work it out. never lost a hen to fights. i don't bring new adults in very often. and brooder raised chicks stay in my basement until they can fly, with young chicks being put in a separate pen on nice days where the adults can see them.

Thank you. Even if they aren't SQ I still love them! Bertha is the sweetest thing! She would sit in my hand all day if I let her. Biff is super protective. When I take her away he cheeps and cheeps until I put her back! Lol! :)

Cochins look like some cool birds. I have never had any. All I have ever had are the farm store egg layers, sex links, barred rocks, RIRs etc.... Since retiring a couple of years ago and with the way things are getting so expensive and unhealthy we decided to raise our own food. We started with rabbits for meat and a ton of potential soil amending material. 2 years ago we moved to our new place in Southern Oregon. Last year we got a flock of RIRs for eggs. We keep a rooster in with those hens for meat. I keep the best eggs to hatch and eat the others. Right now I use Old English Games to brood eggs but they don't like confinement much and need a lot more space inside than most birds. They're excellent moms and I plan to keep them but I am also looking for another brood option. Standard/large sized birds is what I am looking for and I hear cochins might be a good option for me. I don't care about anything but foraging ability, broodiness and mothering ability. Those of you who use your cochins to hatch chicks could you share your experiences as to how good these birds are. They look pretty cool and I think I'd like them running around my yard Thanks

. Hello Cochin lovers. I am Robin and a Cochin lover too. I wanted to share some pics of my blue and black 12 week old chicks. Maybe I should call them chickens now because I have already seen and heard the 2 blue roosters crowing.
