Cochins look like some cool birds. I have never had any. All I have ever had are the farm store egg layers, sex links, barred rocks, RIRs etc.... Since retiring a couple of years ago and with the way things are getting so expensive and unhealthy we decided to raise our own food. We started with rabbits for meat and a ton of potential soil amending material. 2 years ago we moved to our new place in Southern Oregon. Last year we got a flock of RIRs for eggs. We keep a rooster in with those hens for meat. I keep the best eggs to hatch and eat the others. Right now I use Old English Games to brood eggs but they don't like confinement much and need a lot more space inside than most birds. They're excellent moms and I plan to keep them but I am also looking for another brood option. Standard/large sized birds is what I am looking for and I hear cochins might be a good option for me. I don't care about anything but foraging ability, broodiness and mothering ability. Those of you who use your cochins to hatch chicks could you share your experiences as to how good these birds are. They look pretty cool and I think I'd like them running around my yard Thanks
Bob
Hi Bob!
Cochins go broody often and are great mothers, but not the best foragers in my experience. Mine just love to hang around the feeder![]()
Perhaps keeping 2 of them to brood and raise chicks will offset the cost of feeding them.
Good luck! Cochins are lovely birds.
