I'ts hard to tell from pics but they seem to look good. I would not show the father though he looks a little skinny at the bottom unless it's just the pic. Only one way to find out and that is to go and show your birds

Just find a show and enter them, that is how I started.

Thats what I'm afraid of...how you got started- LOL!!!
I unfortunately had a friend that took a show bird to a show, and the incubation period of 18 days, her bird died, then in cycles of the same amount of days others dropped, her loss was the whole flock of showers. So sad.
I go back and forth, appreciating those that show and work so hard at keeping every breed on the books!!!
I do have a Scooter (cochin roo) & Cloe (standard EE) that had a chick!!! I cannot wait to see "her"

grown!
Again, beautiful birds guys!!! Love the "Dr.Denton" look these sweethearts have!

This thread has pictures of two splash cochin I purchased. They are an unusual color for splash. I am going to do a test cross as soon as they get old enough to breed. I purchased them for a project but now I do not need them because Jody supplied me with a bird that will be better suited for the project.

I am interested in why they are not the normal splash color. Then again maybe the hatchery sent me some light colored blues. ???????

Test crossing will give me some answers.

I've personally never seen a blue that light, not to say they aren't out there. Perhaps it's a lavender carrying splash. It's strange the base color. It will be interesting to see how the offspring turn out if you decide to use them. I've only dealt with the analusian blue when breeding my cochins, I always have a white based splash with dark splash's of color, my splash that come from my laced blues even carry lacing in the hackle and throughout the chest. But dealing with a hatchery who knows what you got. Good luck with your project.

Question for those who raise Barred cochins.

Is it normal for roos to have silver crests/hackles. because Fred is showing that instead of a barred crest and i was wondering if that was breed standard of if he isn't show quality... He shows at fair and i don't think they go by the APA standard, but i plan on taking him to iverness and i wanted to know. Pics tomorrow, if needed!

I don't think the silver should be there, hopefully someone specializing in that variety can help. I am attaching a web site link to Tom Roebuck's web page, he raises some very nice barred cochins, his pictures will give you a good idea of the standard. Just click on the barred tab when you enter the page. You could always email Tom with your questions, I know he could help.

'Nother barred Cochin question! In the standard, does barred refer only to black barred? I know several people here are breeding buff barred, and my little geisha-footed pullet is developing faint barring. Would they belong in the barred category or "all other varieties?"

I need some opinions on which color variety of Bantam Cochins I should concentrate on. I don't have alot of room for multiple breeding projects, I'm code restricted on the number of birds I can have, and if I'm going to spend alot of money on good breeders, I would rather focus on only one or two colors. The other reason I want to focus on only one or two colors is to keep the number of roos I have to an absolute minimum. We're allowed to have roos, but they will get you with noise violations if the neighbors complain.

At present, I have 2 (white) Columbian hens, a young pair of Blue Splash, and 2 Mille Fleur pullets due in next week.

I'd like to bump up one or two of these colors to a trio or quad to focus on. I know the MF's are really in fashion now, but what about the Columbians & Splash?

I'd love to hear some color opinions on these. Thanx!!

there is room for improvement in splash, but you want to use bluexblue to get them. If you breed splash to splash the color will wash out. Be careful that your blues dont' have any gold/brown tint to the feathers. It is VERY hard to breed out.
I dont know too much about columbians other than you don't see too many of those. You may want to get some more info on those.
If you do Mille Fleur, make sure they have good type. That will probably not be a good color to work with for you because it will take a lot of breeding and culling to get nice birds.
I would stick with an established color since there is good breeding stock available.
