Cochin Thread!!!

Anyone know of some good standard cochin breeders in western Canada? I'm set on getting a few and would like purebreds and good quality.

thank you!

Just wanted to show a couple pics of my standard cochins. I have barred and goldlaced.

Now that my little blue/ black Cochins are starting to feather, I want to post a pic and get anyones opinion on their sex since they look so different from each other now. Note: out of all my chicks, these 2 are the sweetest! Especially the blue one.It screams for me until I pick it up and tries its best to "fly" up to where my face is when I peek over the edge.

Black pullet and blue cockerel

Feather sexing is pretty reliable with cochins... mine anyway. Two rows of wing feathers = female. One row of wing feathers = male. Pullets will also begin developing tail feathers more quickly. This will be a good way to tell the difference as they mature until the boys' combs redden.

I really can't see the wings that well in the pic. The big tip off for me is the tail feathering on the black female and the gangkly, muscular look on the cockerel. Some boys will have such exagerated features; puffy chest, tiny wings, bony looking backs. They look like some sort of freak dinosaur for a few weeks. ...and feather in super slowly. I had some boys last year that didn't lose their down feathering for almost 2 months!

The wing feather sexing is pretty good but I have been wrong before... it ain't 100%

I think you are right, I call the blue one REX because of the little"T-rex" looking wings. I will keep him even though hes probably a Roo. My other 5 are hens. Thanks for your input! "It" is the sweetest out of all my chicks. Figures, since Im already the mom of boys, probably why he likes me sooo much...
