Cochin Thread!!!

Not dumb at all. I'm very interested, also. I've heard about juveniles looking "hocky", as Tom says, and then maturing just fine. As so many of us have to make our culling choices when they are juveniles, I would very much like to see some pics of some that "look hocky" but aren't. Maybe some comparison pics of juveniles that actually have vulture hocks vs those that just look hocky. I'm blessed (or maybe cursed?) with some at 2 months that are so heavily feathered that I truthfully have no idea what I'm looking at.

I'm not sure whether I'm overly cautious or overly paranoid.

Here's some examples of what I'm looking at in my juveniles:

I seem to have the same issue. The two GLCs I have with the best feathering on their toes look the most hocky. I was told to wait on them for now. I really need to take more pics.

Very pretty birds, I would interested in some eggs if you sell them once I get settled into my new house. I love the colors.
Do you use a millie roo over a white cochin to get those colors?

Thanx!
Pic #1 is an F1 out of my BLR project - sire is GL and dam is Splash.
Pic #2 is from my MF project - both sire and dam are MF's.
Pics #3 and #4 - sire unknown

, dam is GL. (I waited 3 weeks after getting my GL pair before collecting eggs, but she was obviously still fertile by another roo!! Wish I knew who the Daddy is - I'd love to have more of them!)

I will try to get some photos-I think these are true vulture hocks. They are very obviously "not right". Funny but I see vultures here all the time-they roost behind my house like the Adam's family- and never noticed vulture hocks on them?! My pullet must have quite a set if she out vulture-hocks the vultures! From what I read somewhere true vulture hock feathers are stiff like wing primaries. I will try to get a photo. L

I had a pair of Bantam Sultans a few years ago, which are supposed to have vulture hocks. One had them, one did not - it was easy to see the difference. But they have longer legs and a different stance than Cochins, and they are not as loose or soft feathered like Cochins. Just so hard for me to see/tell what's what with the Cochins.

pinkglory123 asked me to post these photos of her White Cochin. She does appear to have vulture hocks.

For comparison purposes, this is one of my white pullets at about 4 months of age.

I am not sure if you can see it but the vulture hock feathers are very stiff-like wing feathers-not soft or fluffy by any description.
