Ugh.


My boyfriend's brother (who knows NOTHING about chickens) got me some eggs from this person for CHRISTMAS. in the batch of 10 they sent they had 2 green eggs. this person also has bantam rumpless Araucanas... So I assumed they threw in some araucana eggs as a bonus. seemed exciting at first. THEN they hatched out with FEATHERED FEET... SO I was like HMMM.... RED FLAG SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT HERE --ARAUCANAS DONT HAVE FEATHERED FEET--


So I messaged them, and they said they got them from a breeder about 6 years ago and have since then been keeping ALL of their cochins together..... They have NO idea which roos they have are from green eggs... so that means their cream colored layers can have green egg laying offspring. I don't mind having extra green eggers.... I just wish they were not.

Something else that worries me is that they said their flock is comprised of roos and hens of both frizzle and smooth feathers... I am worried that one of my new babies (there are 8 by the way) might end up with porcupine syndrome.

I didn't say single comb birds don't lay blue eggs - visually single combed birds CAN lay blue eggs, but its rare - blue egg genes are almost always associated with pea comb genes.

If single combs are popping up in lavender Ameraucanas, they'd be carrying the single comb gene recessively to their pea comb gene (like some wyandottes - only they have rose combs instead of pea, but single combs pop up now and again because its recessive). Its probably from their ancestors that were used to bring the new color into their breed. But their blue egg gene is connected with their pea comb gene - take that away and you'd have a single combed bird that lays a white egg (providing no brown egg genes are present).

He's one of my favorites, feisty little guy too. He's from Shari McCullough's lines @ Harvest Breeze. Hopefully we'll get some nice babies out of him, I'll be breeding him to some splash hens and some blue hens, see what my best outcome is.
