Cochin Thread!!!

Sorry!

Just starting out and all I have in black is my bantam pullet Sophie in solid black and my mottle black bantam roos Samson. The only others I might even have are still in the egg. If I think of anyone I will let you know.

I was thinking that it couldn't be as easy as breeding out the red in brown red.. that "brown" is more black and nothing like the photos I have seen.

Partridge seems to be the ingredient du jour for outcrossing to improve color/pattern on recent projects. Tom has a nice crossed male for his gold laced. Im giving it a shot for mille fleur and someone else was just talking of using them for another variety... maybe it was brown reds.

Isn't buff a diluted red.. Im wondering if it could dilute the darkness of the brown red and rid the hackle area of pattern? Have you thought of adding reds? I know nice ones are pretty hard to find.

Anyway, it's a worth while project. The simplest varieties are sometimes the prettiest; blacks, whites, buffs... browns. I would still enjoy seeing photos sometime.

I THINK, for 1st generation, you will get 50% solid (dark) blue, and 50% black. You will most probably lose the "silver lacing" in the first generation. But the lacing on the Blues could appear more pronounced. 2nd generation, you only want to work with the 50% blues from the first generation. Cross those blues back to the Silver Laced.

You didn't say whether your SL is male or female? If you don't have a mate for the SL, why not find a mate and focus on pure SL's? We need more people working on SL's. That can be a very rewarding challenge in itself.

As both Blue and Silver Laced are based on Black, you're not going to get into the "warmer" colors you're looking for with this cross.
