I don't know anything about combs turning red that is a trait for cockerels. I haven't heard of it, but I am no expert by any means!!
I only found out recently from another cochin breeder the way that she sexes her birds and she said it was accurate thus far. I would say that these babies are pullets based on you mentioning their primary's are longer and tail feathers as well. Are these bantams?
