Cochin Thread!!!

I have 2 cochins hens that are always broody, a white one and a black one.. last year the white one sat on and hatched an EE egg, and was a super mom. I tried her again this spring, and she ate the eggs! I gave the black cochin a try, and she sat on and hatched 3 eggs, she ate 2 as soon as they hatched, I saved one!

I've just put some eggs under my white one again because she is relentless! she will just sit in a empty nest being all broody! I've put her on about 5 eggs in a large dog crate with food and water.... is there any other tips or suggestions you can give me to help her out?

thanks
Sue

I am not quite sure what type of info you would like.
If you are asking about them eating the chicks or eggs then I would suggest that you always feed starter. I like to add flax meal and rolled oats, too. I offer mashed hard boiled eggs, if I can and live meal worms. Once they have hatched chicks I add free choice BOSS and continue on with starter, flax and rolled oats and other treats until they wean the chicks at about 2 weeks old. Then they get that boring old laying mash again.

Most people think chickens eat eggs because they need more calcium but often they just want the protein. Though my chicken mash is 16% I add BOSS and anything else high in protein. They eat bugs all the time so their need for protein is pretty high, imo. Although, they did just watch a grasshopper go across the barn yard and no one bothered to go eat it. I think summer is winding down now. That tells me their protein levels are fine, even the ones that are molting out.

I seldom separate my hens from the flocks but it depends on breeds, too. Silkies and Cochins seem to enjoy the flock to help raise the babies. Where my Wyandottes dare anyone to get near the eggs or babies! They are good moms.

No Thanks! LOL! I have about 100 cochins right now and 10 Phoenix. I was okay until the feed store started raising their prices. $7.99 a 50lb bag of scratch last summer compared to $12.49 this summer. I catch them on sale now and then but it's still HIGH!!! I hate getting rid of anybody though but I have human mouths to feed too!

I hear you. It is tempting to cull early, but I know better. I can't even take for granted what I see in a one year old. They change so much between one and two with the LF.

I'm not culling so much as deciding what breeds to concentrate on. Working full time, 2 kids in sports, gardens to keep up, it get's overwhelming at times. But every time a tiny chick hatches...you remember what it's all for and why you love it so much~ Plus it's very ADDICTING!!!

Thank you for the compliments.
I do not care for his color and getting that brass out of the hackle feathers is proving to be super difficult so I put these two hens in with him to see what results I get from this cross. I just keep trying different colored (phenotype and genotype) for him to see if I can find something that clicks in color.
Believe it or not, I get a lot of pastel colors from him. A lot of blue mixed with creams, whites and often a bit of black. Interesting and easy to sell the excess chicks but still not for me.

However, his personality is very good and his type is what I want to see on my birds. He has no major faults so I keep him. However, when he was much younger I did not care for his color and almost gave him up but he is just too typy. If nothing else, he lets me see what I need to strive for on all my bantam Cochins.

I just joined into the conversation here to show that when you give them up early you may miss something this gorgeous!

Hey Amy!!
Your birds are doing great and I am so in love with your BC (my Cezanne in my avatar.) He is the absolute best roo ever and he is soooooo beautiful.
Everyone comments on him.

He is a papa now. I finally hatched out some eggs 2 months ago (my first time). Silly me I only gave my broody mama (an Australorp) 6 eggs and 4 hatched out. From what I can tell I have 2 cockerels for sure and 2 hens. Cezanne is papa to all four but I think I only had 1 cochin hen egg hatch. The others are cochin-welsummer, cochin-amerucana (she - I'm hoping, is gorgeous!), cochin-australorp. the cockel that I think is pure cochin is HUGE and started to crow at 3 weeks. I sware he thinks he is the boss of the chicken paddock. When they get a little older I will send you photos. All of your birds are molting again and looking very beautiful.

We are so glad to have been able to buy your LF birds.
Have a geat holiday
Posey
