I'm afraid your Mottled chick isn't Mottled, it appears to be another Blue or possibly Black, it's hard to tell from the photo. The chick in the photo with the Barred cockerel, may be another Barred, maybe a pullet.
Cute chicks.

Hello all

I'm new to the Cochins and got some hatching eggs from a mixed pen of colours plus some pure lavenders. Hatched out a variety of cuckoos/mottles/buff etc Am now completely in love with breed and am going to go against my rule and get a boy for my fav girls.

I do have two that I am struggling to call what colour, I tried getting some answers in the what breed? section but I think I lucked out so I'm asking the experts! If anyone can help me that would be fab, also any suggestions of what colour boys to go with them would be great.

Stupidly I took a photo against a light background so the colour doesn't show up great but they are a bright buff head and chest and then the darker colour is beige. Does Buff Fawn sound about right?!?

Thanks

I'd like to see your "Mottled" chick in a few months. A real Mottled of any breed, has a tuxedo or a white bib that extends all the way down their front almost to between their legs until they mature and develop their mottled color. I have a friend who breeds Mottled Cochins and it is a very distinct look. This chick is showing some kind of an interesting pattern on the breast feathers, but not Mottled.

so cochins must be way different than the mottle japs we have

the cochins at hatch if that helps

That is true that they are like that (penguins) as fuzzy chicks but this chick pictured is feathering out and showing correct color for some. I have had several look like that as a feathered chick and they grow up normal for a Mottled and produce more Mottleds.

LF black Cochins start out like penguins and mature totally black.

My first broody pullet and Cochin! I'm not really sure what color to call her, she is from Welp Hatchery and only 6 months old! She's my youngest broody so far
