We've bumped up against this question not too long ago on this thread I believe, anyway.......It is doubtful that you will get good quality eggs or chicks from Partridge and several other varieties of hard to find Cochins because breeders that have the really good birds won't let go of either eggs or chicks. You will have to start looking in the fall and buy started birds. This is when the breeders have made their cuts and decided what they will be keeping and what to let go of.

Lilcrow is correct. Good Partridge are had to find. I have some but do not ever sell eggs or chicks. I also question wanting to hatch eggs this time of year. I have hatched even earlier in the year and have never had the chicks reach their full potential(all undersized/stunted). I do not know if it is the temps or shorted days but I will probably never hatch later than July ever again.

I have hatched in the fall and have had no problems, maybe because I raise them indoors until they are big enough to handle it on their own. I was probably the one that asked about eggs before. I keep hoping that if I ask enough times and enough places, someone will be able to lead me in the right direction. We were so excited to purchase a pair, and then the hen has never laid since we brought her home. Its disappointing to say the least. I have an ad on Craigslist too wanting a pullet.
If we wait until Spring, the birds would not be old enough to show at our county fair, which is one of the places we show for 4-H. Thanks.

Hey Craig, ya wanna trade?
She is lovely! Very nice clean lacing, I'm impressed. I'm having problems with shafting and have ONE pullet from this year that is clear, but she is very heavily laced, I'm afraid too heavy once she reaches maturity. I'm just going to keep my fingers crossed.

Gold or tawny lacing or anything else on Blue is an absolute no-no, you could not show her. IF she has exceptional type and everything else is perfect and this is her only fault you could give her a try with a Black roo, but always keep in mind what is behind your stock. This could be something that could come back and bite you in the........ahem.........booty. And, if your first generation shows ANY off color STOP breeding her, it will only get worse.

Thanks! I'm still new to the cochins but she seems to have good type to me. The rooster has a far better stance I think, and his cushion is much better but I like her lacing a lot. It's better then my older hen's lacing already but I'm waiting for a later moult to be sure. I'm used to breeding Faverolles, so a couple of months is nothing to wait. Faverolles don't show their true colors until 8 month old! ):

The splash rooster in town is very nice looking and very large. But he came from Cackle Hatchery and I'm a little wary of breeding to hatchery stock. Should I look for another rooster, or will it be okay? So far I've seen nothing but great birds come out of Cackle, but if something unwanted might pop up later in the chicks, I can look to other breeders for more stock.

Thanks again,
Sierra

The Black rooster is the Cackle bird? If this is the case, I would strongly advise that you look for a different rooster to use. Now is a good time to look for one also, there will be breeders that are ready to clear out this years discards and you should be able to find a very nice bird.
I just looked at this again and I'm confused, are you breeding to a Black or a Splash? Unless your hen is VERY dark, I wouldn't breed to a Splash, I might be wrong but I would be afraid of getting too many washed out Blues, but I'm sure you'd get a number of Splash. I'm embarrassed to say I can't remember the % of what colors you'll get.

It's ...

Blue X Splash = 50% Blue , 50% Splash

Blue X Black = 50% Blue, 50% Black

The black cockerel is my own. He's not from a hatchery, I bought him from a breeder that was selling on ebay. I could look up who. The splash is owned by a friend of mine and he's from Cackle. The hen is too dark, not super, but not powdery either.
