Cochin Thread!!!

Its just mind numbing drivel over a marginal bird. If it is a Buff Columbian it has no hackle markings. It is not a good representative of any variety. It is an attractive bird to have in the yard. I would like to have a few like him for looks but not breeding.

trying to figure what I need to get to inprove my breeding, and trying to get my other birds on here.

Well, personally I'd like to see your rooster posed in front of some things that gives me an idea of his size, something like a car, that would be easy to relate him to. If we can't determine whether he is a standard or a bantam it is hard to give you accurate feedback. Your said you got him from the folks that you gave us the link to, they only have bantams according to the web site. If he truly is a standard, then I'd say you've got a very nice starter bird for a Brown-Red project. I wasn't joking when I told you there are no Brown-Red standard Cochins and there is only one, maybe two breeders that are working on them. So, like I said IF he is a standard, he's very nice............as a starter bird.
If he is a bantam I am sorry to tell you that as a show bird, he would not stand up to the competition.
And I must be really slow today, because I still don't understand what you're saying with, "and trying to get my other birds on here." Spell it out for me or someone else please explain it for me so that I get it.
edited for spelling and grammar of course.

what I mean is I am working to get pics on here, posting them now.

I'm sorry shawna, I'm just a wimp when it comes to giving folks feedback about their birds, and you never know when you're going to hurt someone and they won't come back. I'm glad Craig got us straightened out.

Yes, maybe they are just late bloomers? I had posted pics of them a couple months ago and the consensus was that they were cockerels, maybe I should post pics again? I don't really see any saddle feathers or pointy hackle feathers yet, but their combs and wattles are definitely larger then everyone else and very red.

I have a four month old rooster he just start to crow a week ago.

Mine are all over the place. Some crow at 6 weeks and a few get saddle feathers before I hear them crow. Some have distinct combs early and some ?????

that I am vary sure of.

FYI . . . This is a resurrection of a post from June of 2009 - see post #43. In post #50, chikenlady said Mr. Fancy Pants is a standard. Chikenlady hasn't posted on BYC since April of 2010.

lilcrow, this was the original bird that I said almost looks like he has some golden lacing going on. The one that I said looked Buff Columbian belongs to Shawna.

I agree, Shawna, yours (the one I'm saying looks more like a Buff Columbian) looks like a pet bird. Not really very good markings on him and not a good conformation from what I can tell, but his stance isn't the best for judging conformation. I'm sure he's great to look at in the backyard, but if you were breeding towards a standard I wouldn't use him.
