Cochin Thread!!!

I just took this picture of my 5 week old cochin bantam, Buttons. She is so tiny. See the little bottle of finger nail polish next to her?

Just got back from shutting everyone up for the night, all the roos have had their spa vaseline treatment for the night, supposed to freeze. Everyone got pumpkin this evening, all the fall decorations come in handy, they were pretty happy chowing down. Did I read somewhere that pumpkin seeds are a good wormer?

I like your choices. I have Cochins and my neighbor has Marans. I was just over at his place checking out this year's pullets and roos, such neat, dark eggs. If I had room and time for a laying flock I would get Marans. But as it is I can live vicariously thru my neighbor's flock.
My neighbor has about 150 chickens and some other birds plus hair sheep and he cares for it all from a wheelchair. He hatches about 1000 chicks a year and I help with the brooders. That is where I caught the chicken bug, when I gathered up some bantam chicks he was hatching for his brother. His brother has about 100 SQ OEGB, and I thought that was what I wanted. I researched breed temperments and other qualities and finally chose Cochins. I have never, for a moment wished I had chosen another breed. They are so sweet and beautiful. I love the gentile roosters but the girls just enchant me.

Mine LOVE pumpkin, especially with black sunflower seeds sprinkled on the top.

I never thought about the black sunflower seeds! I need to get some!

Do you give access to grit when they have sunflower seeds? I have never had combs freeze until 0 or below.

Pumpkin seeds are a good dewormer. Mostly I use red pepper flakes in a wet mash 4 times a year but I liked using the pumpkin seeds after cleaning out the gourds.

Yes, I always have a bowl or pile of it near their feeders. I use hot peppers too for worming. Yogurt, warm oatmeal.....
My neighbor laughs at how I spoil my birds, says "They won't be worth killin"
