Cochin Thread!!!

Are there any of you that sell day old chicks?
When I start my chicken project this year, I definitely want cochins. But I don't know where to find them. There's lots of hatcheries out there, but I personally don't really want to buy from hatcheries.

I don't have enough experience to buy eggs and hatch them myself.. :}

I think I speak for most of us when I say good breeders don't sell day old chicks. Our stock is too good to sell so cheap. My birds go for $35-$50 per bird, and you would have to buy 20 at that price to keep them warm in shipment. Plus we are not like hatcheries, we don't crank out tons of chicks at a time. You would do better to buy a few adults or started birds from a good breeder.

I agree with fattie about not selling day olds or even 3 mo old for that matter, however my reason is because I can't tell what they are going to mature out to at that young age. To be frank about it, I want the best birds for myself and if I let go of eggs or chicks, I might be giving someone else my best. That is not to say you can't get a really good bird from a breeder, you're just not going to get the best.

And thanks everyone for your help w/the pics. Gail the link is very helpful, thank you.

I can't imagine selling day old chicks. And I keep birds until they are almost ready to breed, since I to want to keep my best. Hatching eggs and chicks are a gamble. Sometimes you win, but the odds are against consistent quality. Really nice started birds and adults usually cost real money. But they are worth it, because they are a known quantity if you buy them from a reputable breeder And you get "connections"

Okay, thanks for you guys' input.
So would a better question for me to ask be, are there any of you who plan on selling some adult birds instead? :)
Maybe it would be better if I got 2 or 3 already adults that way I know their temperament and personalities?
