Cochin Thread!!!

Hi guys!

It's been a LONG time since I've been on BYC! But Craig's been bugging me to come back, so here I am.

We're in the process of moving, so the birds are all being taken care of by relatives and my husband and I are living in town about a half-hour away. If the bank cooperates, we'll be in our new place and I'll have all my birdies again within a month!

In the meantime, here's a picture I took yesterday when we went over to check them all after the temperature dipped to -13 degrees overnight! Brrrrr! Happy to report that all 23 Cochins are just fine, although 2 or 3 of the roos suffered some frostbite damage to their combs.

Craig - I'm going to get some pictures of the babies I hatched from these 2 last year - I didn't hatch any out until probably mid-August, so they're not even 6 months old yet. None of them looked really happy about me opening their coop and letting all the cold air in!

I did manage to grab one of their daughters and snap a picture outside quick (one of the other pullets had a MAJOR picking problem and did a number on her feathers, but the mean little picker has since been removed to another pen with a big, old roo that doesn't put up with it!)

Welcome back!! You sure have kept them in good shape!

I have a pretty good one but I would never sell to someone who says type doesn't matter. Type always matters.

Not when it's for a breeding project that won't end up looking like a Cochin. If the Cochin male is round and fluffy, it will just take my son longer to get to where he wants to be on his project. So, I beg to differ, in this case, type does not matter. What I need is good color and good temperament. Thank you, but I have had another offer anyway.

While I am here, I have a question. My columbian roo carries his wings lower than I would like him to. I read somewhere (maybe this thread) that if they do not have a chance to fly up to a perch, the muscles that allow them to hold them properly become weak. My roo has never had a perch and does not get a chance to free range. Is it possible to exercise his wings and see if he carries them higher, or am I just talking crazy? Here is a pic of him.

Most of my birds like to roost and I think it has made a difference in the wing carrage of my roos. My very best (and few SQ) birds dont seem to like to roost as much though. They actually can't fly very high.

Hi Mopargal1972, and all other cochin lovers,

I just moved here to MO from Florida with all my sweet chickens. There was a wonderful facebook group there for Floridians called Chicken Swap of Florida. Instead of people waiting for a swap or having to hope a nearby person would have info on chickens, everyone shared info and swapped all year round. The administrator of that website has started Chicken Swap of Missouri for me on facebook and I am hoping to add as many members as she has (515 members) so that we can have as wonderful a group here in Missouri.

If you could join up on facebook, and pass this along to others that you know, I would be eternally grateful. I am just starting this group, and am looking forward to finding other chicken people in my new home state. :)

Thanks!

Thanks for the advice guys. I am really glad that you will be in Sedalia Craig. Will you possibly have any columbians for sale at that time?

Welcome to Missouri Carol! How are you liking this lovely weather? What do I search for on FB? Chicken swap of Mo? I will try to find it, but if I can't I will PM you.

When is the show in Sedalia? I'm wanting to get into showing this year and might just have to swing by to get an idea of how this show thing works.

Sadly, there is nothing new here. I am still looking for some nice columbian hens to go with my columbian roo. My black cochin bantams are doing well, but not laying right now. I am anxiously awaiting eggs to put in the bator. Also looking forward to taking my frizzled cochin bantam girl and my columbian roo to the spring show in Sedalia.

Sounds like a great Idea. I sent a request to join the group

I'll probably just be watching this time since I've never even been to a show. Hopefully I can make the trip we have a lot of birthdays in our family in the month of april so extra money runs short. We'll see what we can do though..... I just got a flock of splash cochins and after I learn more about them and showing I hope to hit a few shows with them and my silkies. If I get the hang of it I may even show some of my ducks. My runner ducks were bought as Top Show Quality from Holderread so it would be nice to see how they place.

I'm going to upload a few pics of my bantam splash cochins. I just got them a couple days ago. I had been wanting some splash cochins and even bought hatching eggs from a guy in Texas, but I only managed to hatch out 2 out of the 6 eggs so when I seen an entire flock of them nearby I had to get them. Some of them are supposed to be from Show Quality lines, but I'm still learning about what to look for with the bantam cochins as far as show Quality goes.
