Cochin Thread!!!

The chick above looks to be a Silver Penciled Cochin. Im sure if you look on a hatchery website you can see what the chicks looks like. Very similar to this one I believe. That is just my opinion.

On a side note, I got some pics yesterday of the birds Im sending to Judy Gantt. It was hard to decide which bird I wanted to keep between these two and the one I kept. Both these birds have better combs than the cockerel I decided between the three, but his type is far better and his personality is better than these two. Also snapped one of three of the five pullets preening in the sun while it was a toasty 77. Hope you guys enjoy.

This is what my silver laced Cochin looks like so you can compare the two. I hope this helps. Yours are a little more developed than mine. Let me know if you need more photos of a specific area of the chick. Angela

I agree with rosey, I think they are too dark to be Silver Penciled chicks.

That's not a pea comb,

I have Ameraucana as well as cochins, that looks like a baby single comb to me. My guess is that you have a pullet there. My little cochin roos have more comb than that by that stage, but my pullets look just like that. My Ameraucana roos by that age already have three rows showing up on their combs. My guess would be silver laced cochin, I don't have that variety, so I am really reaching on the color guess.

She sure is cute, though!!

YES!!!! That is what she looked like when I first got her Angela. I have a hard time with determining what type of comb it is when they are this young and small. Yes she is supposed to be a pullet so you are right about that also. I am sooooooo thrilled she is a Cochin. I was hoping she was going to be one. I already have 2 Brahmas so I wanted her to be something else. I like variety. Mr. Ree your hens are absolutely gorgeous. I can't wait to see what mine will look like. I will keep you all posted with pictures of her growth!! Thanks everyone.

Cute chicks. I read something a few days ago that you can sex babies by looking at their wing feathers. Something about how the female's primaries or secondaries will be even in growth, and the male's will be uneven.

Something like that.. do any of you know what I'm talking about and is it true?

Hey just got these little ones today, they were in the mixed bantam bin at the local feed store and I'm pretty sure they are cochin due to the fluffy pink/yellow legs from the pics I have found I am thinking I have a silver pencil bantam and a black or burchin bantam wondering what the experts think???

I wanted to share a couple of pictures of my 8 wk old partridge bantams. I am really excited about how they are looking so far, they are already as fluffy as the momma was at about four months. I can't wait to see how they will mature. They are already developing cute little cushions.

This group is so sweet to, they are under my feet or in my lap constantly. The boys are not shaping up nearly as quickly as the girls, they don't look as fluffy yet. Do boys fluff up more slowly? The feather color pattern is also very messy looking on the boys, they are in that so ugly they are cute stage.
