Cochin Thread!!!

Can any of u help me with my cochins color? Mothers buff. Father is white. I have another one that hatched and its differnt than this one. Will post pics of it when dry. I psted in this section but no one told me what color it could be. What do u cochin experts think.

I am no expert but will tell you what I think
It will not be any pure color. It will be a pretty bird and good pet. That is enough.

looks like it could be a buff columbian pattern but it's hard to tell when it's a chick in down. they do change a lot before adulthood

hi cochin lovers!!!
I have a pair of giant splash cochins and I would like some more giants, only hens, I love all the colors so the colors do not matter. Can anyone help me out or lead me in the right direction?
Thank you

I have a down color question.-
Last Summer, while adding Black Mottled to improve my Mille Fleur's type, I had a white downed chick hatch. Unfortunately it ended up being a roo with poor type but looks much like a Columbian in color and pattern. From the same pairing I also got a predominately black roo with much better type. I call the brothers Angel and Diablo though both are pretty sweet. I have kept the "Columbian" roo mostly out of curiosity.
Before I finished rearranging my breeding pens this spring, I collected and test set some eggs from a pen where Angel and Diablo were with some Calico girls. This week 2 more white chick hatched.
What color are Columbian chicks? I know Buff Columbians and Black mottles make Mille Fleurs and i don't want another color project but these strange looking chicks make me curious. I have friens that want pretty colored birds so I have homes for the white chicks. I am breeding Diablo now with my best typed Mille girls and I have since got a really nice Mottled roo to improve type even more.
I think I have some nice colored Milles but know their type needs much improvement. I can tell that the Mottles are really going to play with the Mille colors for a while. They are all some pretty flashy colored birds in the mean time.

Above are pics of Angel and Diablo and below is one of the new white chicks with a Calico and a Black.

Hi, Lilcrow.
Sorry I have been absent, to many research papers to close together.

I am so sorry to hear you are having surgery, I pray it will go well.

I am sad to think you will give up

I know you have some wonderful stock, and if you do decide to let them go, I would love to get some from you, but I am sure I can't afford to ship them all.

Thanks so much. Well, I am surprised things have been so quiet this week, I didn't miss much while I had my nose pressed to the old grind stone.

Lisa, that's a shame. It's so difficult when your numbers are limited like that. She was a lovely hen and I agree with you about not crossing the pullet chicks back on their dad, his type is not as good as your hen, unless maybe he was molting in this picture. As you know, I've worked really hard to put together the flock I have and I do have two very nice roos from Jamie Matts. This winter has been really hard on me and I'm facing back surgery sometime in the next 2 or 3 months. I've been debating about cutting back on the number of varieties that I have and I'm thinking of letting the Partridge go. You can let me know if this is something you might me interested in.

My Black mottled Roo is doing great; leading the fertile egg race, and I thought he might be too old! - named him Pappy. The Blue mottled pullet has filled out even more. I love them both. So here I am working with andalusian blue though I tried to avoid it. I have a Mille fleur pullet in the pen too and I can tell the eggs apart. The Blue's eggs are white and the Mille's are cream. Their chicks are clearly different too; The Mottled/Mille chicks have distinctive contrast bet. the black and yellow. I sure am going to have alot of chicks to grow out.

I am having troublefiguring out the new way to post pics with text. Sorry for the disorder.I

The following pictures are of several 5 day old Columbian chicks I took pictures of this morning. My chicks appear to be about the age of the chicks in your picture. My chicks are typical down color of Columbians. Hope this helps

I have a blue/buff colored LF Cochin pullet that is filling out and I would like to figure out what to cover her with. I only have a LF cockerel "max" at this time and he is black. Any ideas about what she is? "Lemon" also has very fine penciling on her feathers. I don't know the parent genetics, but she is a fun color.

MJ -

I too hatched a few columbian looking males from my Mille Fleur pen this past Winter. All three show some gold leakage on their saddles. Out of the same hatch I also got a red with some black feather tips. I suspect these reverts just are the genetic results of the mix of genes being used to fix the MFs. My are of adequate type so Ill be keeping them to breed in if necessary in the future.
