Cochin Thread!!!

Hi, maybe someone could answer my question. Do Cochin combs grow in slow? I have a white Cochin that was suppose to be a boy but he has a very tiny comb and is 10 weeks old. I was thinking a few weeks ago he was looking like a girl but decided to wait and see, well now at 10 weeks old still no comb and its skin color with no hint of red at all.

hi all-I have been lurking this thread for a week or so, trying to glean info, but to be honest, at this point it's WAY over my heads discussing genetics, etc. but I wanted to introduce myself.

My name is stephanie, and i recently got bit by the chicken bug. I have a sweet little backyard flock that is halfway to eggs (yay!) and I decided that I ALSO wanted to run a simultaneous little breeding program. My space is limited, so I looked for a breed that was child-friendly, robust, and cute of course. I have a cochin in my grab bag that I now think is a bantam cochin. She was one of my heartiest birds in the backyard flock, so I finally landed on this breed after more research.

I don't know what colors yet, but I am really drawn to blacks, greys, whites, and lavendar or porcelain birds. So I bought my first "pair" this weekend of birchen's that are roughly 3 months old. I also bought 4 chicks, 2 are sibling black lace, and one splash, and one that looks like it will be a blue.

I have some pics of the stock, and when I get a chance (probably tomorrow) I will post some pics of my breeding pair. I have read over and over to breed for "type" so I am sure that I will have to bring in some other lines to improve, but here is some of my starting stock :)

This is supposed to be a silver lace. Can someone tell me if there is a way to determine gender?

Here is the mom, which I don't own. I think her color is nice, but she isn't as round as she should be, right?

and then my splash baby came from this pair, but splash isn't recognized, right? But it was so cute I bought it anyway, not sure if I could use it to produce some mottled? (again, learning genetics)

as far as the splash go it depends on if they were from mottleds or not. my splash come from blue mottleds so they are actually mottled (hard to see on splash though) if they are from straight solid blues then it would make the offspring of them and a mottled only split to mottled

Going through this thread just makes me want some Bantie Cochins even more! But I can't seem to find any of them here in Mexico. :/

So this may be stupid comment but why is there no "sticky" as the first post? on another non-chicken forum each subgroup (like Cochins) has a sticky with links and faq's for newcomers as well as forum guideline links so that newbies like myself can reference it before posting repetitive questions.

One of the members here pm'ed info to me on breed standards which I was unfamiliar with. I kept looking on this thread for a link to get those questions so I didn't ask a newbie quality question.

Anyway that is just a thought/request/suggestion and feel free to drive on by if this has also been requested in the past and shot down

So then maybe I should wait on the pullets so I can get more for them? Looks like they may turn out to be very good quality, from other people's pics of Roslyn's stock. ?

there are general stickies in the forums for general posting info, and if you read people's sig lines a lot of time there is more info to be found.

worst case, if you're ever looking for breed specific info, try google. the breed clubs usually have lots of info on their websites for standards, pics of quality birds, etc.

i've found 3 times of 4, if i google a question i have about something, byc is in the first few links shown, with a thread corresponding to whatever i am looking for.

cochins international is the club group for both LF and bantam cochins. the APA website has a lot of good general info as well.
