Cochin Thread!!!

Question to the Cochin world...would putting a box fan in the coop window be recommended to help keep air cool on the hot days for my cochins. The rest of my flock, other varieties, seem to be doing well, but the cochins struggle with the heat. I have done this for my horse in her stall in the past, just a thought. i did the water bottles on the ground, in the wateres, etc, sprinkler in the run...but I was thinking the fan might help...feedback pls.

a fan would probably be very welcome. air circulation can't hurt for any reason. i have a fan in the horse trailer (coop) blowing out of the front window, then cooler air comes in, across the floor and rises as it heats, pulling moisture and warmth out as it goes. moisture is my biggest enemy, as the horse trailer isn't entirely water tight anymore... i think it's got more rust than steel left. but the paint holds it all together. LOL we're planning on building a pole barn style roof over it, so that should help.

I have done it for years it will not hurt a thing but will help them!

If you have good birds which I know you do fertility should be almost zero unless you AI, pluck, or clip feathers. When plucking you pluck the male from the vent down and the hen vent up. You know when you have plucked enough when you put pressure on the bird like they are breeding and the vent is still clear. It will seem like a lot of feathers but they START to grow back in 6-8 weeks. Clip the feathers as you would pluck but they won't grow back until they molt. I know you know this but am posting it for all those who read our thread but never ask a question or post. I hope everyone feels they can post and get the information they are looking for.

I have plucked in the past...and got better fertility

This year I wanted to keep most of my good birds in show condition, considering that the Central Maine BF Club has only two shows a year. So I didn't trim any butts! And the Spring show was a regional Cochins International Specialty

Now that the Spring show is over, I guess I'll go out there and give massive haircuts!

And Coopa - I do wonder how this breed will survive as we try to make gorgeous birds who can't breed without HELP lol
