Cochin Thread!!!

Okay...I've posted pics of this little girl before, but she still has me puzzled. Hoping some of you might be able to help out. Her color is still a mystery to me, but it has changed quite a bit since she lost some more baby feathers. She also seems....extra fluffy to me. She is our first cochin so we are just learning about the breed. Any advice or input would be appreciated.

Ok, my other bantam brahma looks like she is on the hormonal broody fence. I caught her in with Summer and she had stolen two eggs to sit on but once I pushed her out of the crate and blocked her entrance she keeps going in and out of the coop. I think she will find the golfball and egg(infertile) that I left next to Summers crate at some point and I will have a final answer.

If she does go 100% broody, is there anyone nearby I can buy some bantam hatching eggs from?

Thats what I was thinking. Like a mismarked columbian. She is moulting right now so maybe she will moult out some white and grow in some dark! I won't hold my breath. lol. But she is a very cute chick regardless and my daughter is in love with her. I think she will use her in showmanship regardless. She's already been "training" her.

OK. She is a Columbian cochin. Columbian is the pattern she is. Not a shining example but definitely Columbian. Cochins are by description a soft feathered bird which explains your extra fluffy comment. She is not and will not be show material. She probably will be like mine and easy to handle which will make her OK for showmanship. She may have great type but her pattern will not be good enough. Smutty back and not good hackle lacing. You will love her. I enjoy my Columbians immensely. Trying to get a good Columbian means hatching lots of chicks and only getting to keep a few. Thanks so much Craig. I really appreciate your input and I will be Pm'ing you at some point to pick your brain. My daughter is still a primary, so it isn't the end of the world if her showmanship bird isn't perfect. We are going to try to do hatching eggs in the fall and perhaps we will get some better marked birds out of that lot. They want to do d'anvers, bantam wyandottes, and bantam cochins. Yeah she is super fluffy, almost like a silkie.

This bird though is one of the best I own. She has a great personality and is so easy to handle. Shes still little and we love her already!

I have a few bantam cochins and would like to read up on showing and what to look for in my birds before I take them to the fair. I have gone to poultry shows but I was looking for something a little more breed specific.
