Cochin Thread!!!

My cochin pullets are 17 weeks now. How soon should I be getting eggs from them? I noticed today that a few of my teenage pullets (various breeds) are starting to get the redder combs starting up. I know that is a sign of impending laying. I'm hoping to see some eggs from them all soon. Also what color egg should I expect? I know they lay brown but how light or dark are we talking? The only other brown egg layers that I have currently laying are production reds.

Well that's something to look forward to! I don't even know which of my hens that are laying now lay which eggs. I just know that my all but one of my EEs lays a green egg. One EE lays a blue egg and I have no clue which one lays it. I have it down to 2 out of 4 though that could be laying the blue egg only based on the 2 EEs that went broody and I still had my blue egg being layed. I know my PRs lay the only brown eggs I get right now. Boy will it be fun when all the new pullets start laying. Most are brown egg layers but some are white egg layers and one should lay a blue egg for me.

I have about 40 young black cochins running around here. Still too young to pick my favs. So I am feeding them all!!!!

Yes, she's broody. Only way to know if the egg is fertilized for sure is to crack it open and look for the bullseye in the yolk.

or let her sit on them and candle after a week or so.

but if you're going to let her go broody i recommend taking the eggs away and give her fakes to sit on for a week or so and once eggs stop showing up then give them back. but mark them so you know which ones you let her have, in case other hens lay in the nest. otherwise you'll have hatching over a range of time and after the first chicks hatch they usually give up sitting to become momma mode within a day or so. so nearly ready eggs may die because she didn't wait for them.

what would I get if I crossed blue over mottled? Anything good? Some ones got some around here and I might increase my pair into a flock with them.

crossing mottled to a solid, all your chicks will be solid. black to blue you'll get half black half blue. blue to blue you'll get a variety of blue black and splash.

the only way to get mottled would be to breed 2 birds that carry mottled together.

I am near seminole and have some young red brown/lemon blue roos coming up from my first attempt at hatching out lemon blues from eggs...I have 4 young brown red/lemon blue roos available.
