Hi, congrats about her first egg

just wondering at what age I can sex my little pekin chick (Pekins are pretty much the same as bantam cochins)
He / She has just turned 5 weeks old so I should be able to tell but I only hatched one pekin in this hatch so have no comparison,
I think it could be a girl---

Also, I'm selling one of this chicks older brothers, Should I be calling them Blue Pekins or Lavender Pekins?
in europe they call it lavender, in the US it's self blue (and IMO too confusing with the OTHER blue for some). and yes i'd say it's a pullet. my 2 5 week old self blues are both cockerels and the comb is VERY distinct.

wow Love Love Love the color of these chickens what are they a cross between how do you get chickens like these
A buff laced single combed Brahma to my Doerr GLCs. All the birds pictured are heterozygous for dominant white. I am not aiming for white laced red.

I have been building my bantam cochin flock since spring. I have ended up with 6 columbians I am keeping, I have several buff to keep, 1 buff columbian hen is a keeper, 2 possible roos to keep that are splash and 4 hens that I will keep, I have a red hen, 3 silver laced, 2 blue, 3 black, I have a 1 year old mottled hen that I am keeping she has great type and foot feathering but she has too much white in her, I also have a young pullet that looks to be mottled but is getting some red chevrons.
My question is for all the Gentics gurus out there. I plan on breeding columbians, buff columbians and splash. What other colors can I put together and what will I come up with.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

These are young birds and several are showing good type some better than others so there may be more I will not keep. I dont breed to show but I do want the best quality birds I can find.

Please any suggestions are welcome and appreciated!

well, for one you can put blue black and splash together, and get more blue black and splash, you could put the mottled in there too, but unless the roo also carries mottled, you'd just get the bbs first generation.

the silver laced i would keep separate, or put with a black roo if you don't have a silver laced.

the rest i don't have much of a suggestion, unless you keep buff/buff columbian together, and maybe white columbian too but no idea what you'd get.

Disagree on previous advice given on silver laced. You can use a Columbian male on SL. You do not have the laced feathers in the first generation but will start to in the 2nd if done right. Both are Silver Based. Do not use a Black on SL. The SL will not do you much good towards your goal but
if you like yours like I like mine you will just keep her and enjoy.

For what you want to do. You need a Columbian male, a Buff Columbian male, and a Blue male.
You need Columbian hens and or Buff Columbian hens as well as BBS hens. The just plain buffs won't do you much good. The Columbian hens can be used to produce Columbians if bred to a Columbians or Buff Columbian hens if bred to a Buff Columbian male. The male chicks from this cross are to never be used in future breeding(cull). A great article in the Cochin International website under the education section on breeding Buff Columbians. I have a Buff male from the writer of that article.

If you have more questions please ask.
