Cochin Thread!!!

I have a partridge cochin rooster that is currently 7 months old. His colouring is developing VERY slowly. Is this common in partridge cochins?

He's had a major growth spurt in the past month or so. How is his quality? I did see his parents who were shown - with very beautiful plumage. I'm assuming he is just not fully mature..

A buff laced single combed Brahma to my Doerr GLCs. All the birds pictured are heterozygous for dominant white. I am not aiming for white laced red.
Clare, where will you go from here to improve the type? They are truly gorgeous and the color pattern has remained very good so far. I just can't imagine what there is in Cochins that will address the issue of type without really muddling the color.
Great job!

Disagree on previous advice given on silver laced. You can use a Columbian male on SL. You do not have the laced feathers in the first generation but will start to in the 2nd if done right. Both are Silver Based. Do not use a Black on SL. The SL will not do you much good towards your goal but
if you like yours like I like mine you will just keep her and enjoy.

For what you want to do. You need a Columbian male, a Buff Columbian male, and a Blue male.
You need Columbian hens and or Buff Columbian hens as well as BBS hens. The just plain buffs won't do you much good. The Columbian hens can be used to produce Columbians if bred to a Columbians or Buff Columbian hens if bred to a Buff Columbian male. The male chicks from this cross are to never be used in future breeding(cull). A great article in the Cochin International website under the education section on breeding Buff Columbians. I have a Buff male from the writer of that article.

If you have more questions please ask.
Craig
Thanks Craig!
I will check out the Cochin International website for the article. I really hate the genetics stuff! Never understood any of it! All of the help is very much appreciated.
I still really dont know which ones will be keepers because they are still young but some are looking very nice.
Thanks
Tony

With patterned birds that is always a difficulty. You need type and you need pattern. One is no good without the other. When in doubt go for type. Heck I have some hatched in March I am still waiting on. They have type and you really don't know pattern until final molt. Columbian questions can be PM to me any time and I will try ot help.
