Cochin Thread!!!

I hatched 6 chicks born on August 15th - my question is when can I merge them with the main flock and how should I go about doing this?

I see you live at the aproximately same latitude as I do so I expect you will have a fairly cold winter. With fall babies I personally try to keep themout of the adult coop for as long as possible. They just have developed their immune systems like the adult birds, and with a hard winter weather they will be fairly closed up . 4 months was the earliest I added them and then I sectioned offf a corner of the coop. Now I just put any fall babies in my mini coop for the winter.

I have mine in a pen next to the adults I am going to add them too. I NEVER put the young ones in the old birds pen but put the older birds in the young birds pen. I watch closely. Occasionally I have to take out the alpha hen and cage her separate for a while but mostly it works for me.

Thank you for the advise. I have them sectioned off in the coop now and they are seperated from the adults with fence. I don't have a seperate coop for them to be in. I Wish I had more room but then again I would just keep hatching more :)

Quote: guess i've got it easy... i free range everyone (not in a breeding pen), so once the babies have been outside in their own pen for a couple weeks i just start opening the door during the day, and make sure they go to their own house for bedtime... after about 2 weeks i shut their house up before bedtime and herd them into the 'big house' once everyone else is up for the night. usually 2-3 nights is all it takes for them to make that home and they're good to go. then the next bunch of babies goes into the baby pen. rinse repeat.

I don't really know much about Cochins, just got my first three hens, BUT! These two pictures are stunning!! And the birds beautiful. Can I have them?

Love that rooster.

Okay everyone I am desperate for maybe 2-4 pullets or hens (bantam cochins, of course
wink.png
)

I've got two VERY LONELY obnioux boys that got put in with my LF cochins becasue I introduced a very special boy to their girls. I know, I know, bad Mommy I am! So now, they are very very very lonely and just can't get the job done on the approx. same age but MUCH larger LF girls. Poor guys really need a couple or so girls of their own. Lucky for them though the LF cockerals haven't a clue what's going on yet, so all get along just fine. Although as the days go by it's obvious, my boys are getting more & more frustrated, if ya know what I mean! lol

At this time not particular on color really, other than maybe something that would mix/breed/make pertty colors with my all black boys. They don't have to be top notch SQ but would like nice breeders. Prefer no hatchery birds.

My boys are 5 months old so I would like some girls around that age or a little older.

Please PM me with pics, prices. I would like to find more local but will consider shipping, so if the case, please include charges for box & shipping to 37363. Thanks so much & hope you can help me help my boys stay warm & happy this coming winter

well, your best bet is to look for more black, or maybe blue or splash... pretty much you breed black to anything you'll likely end up with more black. possibly with some leakage here and there. i've got a trio for sale, but that includes the rooster too. self blue girl, black girl and black roo. both blacks also carry self blue, so i've been hatching close to 50%... bred to your boys you'd just get all blacks. pm me if that interests you. i'm near Roanoke VA.

Thank you for the advice. I am new to this so that info. really helps.

So, just to be clear on my end, pretty much with the two black all I will ever really get with any other color girl will be black (maybe some seepage)?

That would be okay with me as long as they were "up to standard" etc. or close. I really have no idea if I will ever show (but then again this new chicken addiction has led me into a world I never imaged I would go

) but I would like to breed & possibly sale some day.
If I do I want know I have very nice birds because lord knows since I started this I've looked around & have seen so many that my be so called pure breed etc. but were so far off standard you could almost call them a different breed (is that being ugly?). I have a couple that would probably be in the catergory of not being good for breeding BUT they are some of the first I ever got, so they have a special place in my heart now.

Right now I currently have (6) cockerals, ranging from 2-1/2 months to 6 months, (7) pullets ranging the same as the boys & (4) 3 week olds that I don't know the sex of yet. So, even without counting in the little ones, my roo to hen ratio is not good. I would love other roos but at this time I just don't want to get anymore until I can build up my girls. I am rather impatient to wait until the spring when I
(

) start getting my own little chic-a-dees & like I said I just really want to get the two boys some girls to keep them happy! hehehe

So, thanks for the offer but if you ever decide to only sell some girls I would be very interested to see what you have.
