Cochin Thread!!!

Totally disagree. I don't know what they are but If you breed a Buff Columbian male with Columbian  hen you get Buff Columbian pullets with a few white feathers and males that have no value for breeding either variety. How  Tom and Matt developed Buff Columbian cochins and wyandottes.

It's okay to disagree with me and you are correct if you start the cross with the ideal buff Columbian male crossed on regular Columbian female. You will get buff Columbian pullets and junk cockerels that are heterozygous Ss. I should have stated that it is one of these heterozygous Ss junk cockerels that I wanted her to use in this cross. I used one of these males over a buff hen and one pullet out of 14 buff columbian chicks has the frosting that Crazychicks pullets show. The effect of the frosting around the web of the feather might be due to a Wheaton gene that is carried with the buff/buff columbian. I have pics of the pullet, but I don't know how to post them from my iPhone.

That makes a lot of sense if you use the ones I would have culled. Thank you for clearing that up for me. Like to see the picture someday.

I'm completely confused. For some reason I thought Cochins were tiny birds (like bantams and Silkies), but after seeing pictures here and vids on youtube - now I'm more confused than I was before. Maybe someone can help clarify for me? :)

- Are they large fowl or bantam?

- Are they good egg-layers?

- Are they people friendly?

I'd really appreciate some answers. It turns out my most favorite chicken breed (the Silkie) is NOT a good egglayer (which I never knew until today). I thought they laid eggs nicely, just smaller ones. :(

I was told if I want a large breed chicken that is fluffy like a Silkie, but lays eggs well - try Cochins. But...I thought those were small too.

There are BANTAM Cochins, as well as, LARGE FOWL (sometimes people refer to them as "Giant") Cochins.

There is a thread dedicated to only LF Cochins = https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/484763/large-fowl-cochin-thread
& other ones dedicated to more specific bantam Cochins like = https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/228613/mille-cochin-info

What kinds and sizes of bands do you use to keep track of your bantam cochins? I have never used any on my birds before but they are available at the poultry show so I could pick some up shipping free tomorrow morning. I was hoping to only have to use two sizes - one for chicks and one for adolescent/adult birds. Is this possible?

I got a few birds from Mandy who used wing bands... I like that a lot more than leg bands on the feather legged breeds. for clean legs, i use crimp-on stamped aluminum bands, but the wing bands are much cleaner looking IMO.

Hey Cochin lovers!

I am set on improving my bantams, not showing.
Do you think the Self-blue X black boys better than the self-blue father (mum is in the avatar), which ones are the best and please give me pointers on what to improve on type. (btw I don't mind criticism) A reply would be greatly appreciated

These are the first Cochins I have ever hatched out, I have no experience with them. I thought the two blue were going to be females because they feather out much faster than the black. However, now I think I am wrong. The two blues are much bigger and far more feathered out than the black but both have reddish combs. Could I get some opinions? Hatch date Sept. 7th.
