I've been asking who's going... I wanted to go. I still want to go, I should say.

As far as I read, and I could be wrong, as long as both the father and mother carry it, they could produce mottling. Since, in this case, one parent was and one parent was not mottled and none of the offspring show it, one or more could carry a single mottled gene.

Today was a gorgeous, sunny and warm day in Missouri so I thought I would take some pictures of the chicks!

I realize they look a little ragged due to over crowding and too many young roos! I keep hanging on to so many birds because I am affraid I will get rid of the wrong bird too soon!
Some of them are starting grow their tail feathers back after getting rid of a some birds but I still have a ways to go.

Here are a few of my Columbians. They are about 6 months old now and are starting to fill out good.

Here are my Silver penciled. I had seven cockerals and 2 pullets. I kept waiting for them to get a little older before I decided which cockerel to keep, needless to say they were all pretty plucked! I hope I chose the right boy to keep. He is finally starting to grow some of his tail back. He is something to work with I hope. This little girl is also plucked pretty bad but the other one is worse! I will have their seperate pens ready soon or by spring anyway.

This guy carries his wings too low and isn't the best type. Let me know what your thoughts on all of these.

Thanks
Tony

I've got 3 blue pullets and a cockerel that carry the mottled gene. The father was a black mottled and mother was a splash. Will I get any blak mottled or what will I get?
the parents of the birds you have now were black mottled and splash, right? that means all your birds are blue split mottled.

what this will get you is a 25% of getting mottled, regardless of base color.
base color, you would get about 25% splash, 25% black, 50% blue.

LOL - I'm just a gluten for punishment.

You are not working on Mille Fleurs any more?

I thought the best chance to get mottled out of that bunch is to breed the Black Mottled male to the Pullets.

Well, Hurricane Sandy was kind to us. Usually we lose power during the day for no reason. Our line is very unstable - as in power flickering on average at least once a day. We flickered through Sandy, but the power never went out. I hatched out 18 chicks during the storm! I am very, very thankful to whatever higher powers there may be.

My supposed 'chocolate'. This one is from my own pen, so I have to wonder what the mother's genetic background is (visibly black, but I didn't breed her). You can tell it's not a pure bantam Cochin. It's head is huge, it's bigger than the other bantam Cochin chicks, the feet are pink and it just, overall, doesn't look like a bantam Cochin. Needless to say, I am disappointed. It looks like my MFC chicks, but I know that egg is from that black hen.

I am very excited about these guys! This is the first time I had chicks look the right color out of the shell! The parents don't have breast flowers, so I know they won't be perfect, but I hope they are pretty good!

I also hatched 5 bw/sw/w Ameraucanas.
