Cochin Thread!!!

Today was a gorgeous, sunny and warm day in Missouri so I thought I would take some pictures of the chicks!

I realize they look a little ragged due to over crowding and too many young roos! I keep hanging on to so many birds because I am affraid I will get rid of the wrong bird too soon!
Some of them are starting grow their tail feathers back after getting rid of a some birds but I still have a ways to go.

Here are a few of my Columbians. They are about 6 months old now and are starting to fill out good.

Here are my Silver penciled. I had seven cockerals and 2 pullets. I kept waiting for them to get a little older before I decided which cockerel to keep, needless to say they were all pretty plucked! I hope I chose the right boy to keep. He is finally starting to grow some of his tail back. He is something to work with I hope. This little girl is also plucked pretty bad but the other one is worse! I will have their seperate pens ready soon or by spring anyway.

This guy carries his wings too low and isn't the best type. Let me know what your thoughts on all of these.

Thanks
Tony

I also have Columbians and Silvedr Penciled. Do you have any red leakage on the males or do they carry a white back? I like them all and will enjoy seeing them when older. You saw mine at the show. Yours look pretty close to mine in the pictures. Is that how you would assess them?

I wanted to go to the Maryland Poultry Fancier's on Nov 3rd and 4th. Not sure if that's going to happen since Sandy hit... I haven't checked the webpage either.

Who's going if it isn't washed away?

THe MD show will go on as planned. I will be there. 8 birds entered and I have a vendor table. :) Hope to meet some BYC'ers there.

Hi MJ!
No, I sold all my MF's over a year ago, except my hen Tango (bred by Tim Kerbo). She's so special and sweet - I just haven't been able to let her go. She just finished molting - I should take a new picture of her this weekend. I think she still looks mighty fine!! This is one of my favorite pics of her from a couple of years ago (she's three now):

The roo you are talking about is Picasso, he's a Calico, his coloring has changed a lot! I'll post a picture from a few months ago:
How many chickens do I have??? LOL, WAY too many! Thanks for the compliment on my coop, I'm pretty proud, I built it all by myself, even put on the metal roof. It's also designed to come apart and be moved (we are always looking for a bigger place to buy) More chickens!! haha

I wish he would have kept more of his white~
Love this coloring!

A few pictures from the past...this little bantam loves being a mom..she is always wanting
babies..so, broody very often.
I have a little Birchien now, I should get pictures of her. She's just a pullet, and, doesn't have
much of the white yet. She reminds me a lot of this little black cochin..Fanny. The Birchen's name is Button.

Your birds looked great at the show Craig! Maybe I am just too critical on mine! LOL
I am so worried they won't be up to standard!
I haven't seen any red leakage my male silver penciled. I only kept one of the seven I had. I am not really sure how he measures up. I have never seen an adult silver penciled before. I will look around on Cochins International and see if I can find a picture of one to compare him to. My 2 pullets I have, have been picked at so bad. I hope to have their pen done soon so that I can get them seperated and ready for this spring.

So do you think mine look ok?

Well, Hurricane Sandy was kind to us. Usually we lose power during the day for no reason. Our line is very unstable - as in power flickering on average at least once a day. We flickered through Sandy, but the power never went out. I hatched out 18 chicks during the storm! I am very, very thankful to whatever higher powers there may be.
The Mottled/Black bantam Cochins from Renee:

A White(?) bantam Cochin from Renee:

My supposed 'chocolate'. This one is from my own pen, so I have to wonder what the mother's genetic background is (visibly black, but I didn't breed her). You can tell it's not a pure bantam Cochin. It's head is huge, it's bigger than the other bantam Cochin chicks, the feet are pink and it just, overall, doesn't look like a bantam Cochin. Needless to say, I am disappointed. It looks like my MFC chicks, but I know that egg is from that black hen.

And my MFC chicks from my only breeding pen at the moment.

I am very excited about these guys! This is the first time I had chicks look the right color out of the shell! The parents don't have breast flowers, so I know they won't be perfect, but I hope they are pretty good!
I also hatched 5 bw/sw/w Ameraucanas.
Rayvaughn,
I am happy to hear you were spared by Sandy! Your babies look great! I would love to have some of your MF, Calico or Mottled eggs!

I wouldn't be able to let her go either Gail! She is so pretty!

Wow! I sold all my Partridge Cochins except an older pair that are pets. Would like to breed them some day but my Mille Fleurs and Self-Blues take up the space now. The Self-blues are making fast progress but the Mille Fleurs are a more complex project. I won't stop though, all of them are so pretty.
