I already showed pictures of your updates...... I got the "You are not going to spend that kind of money on chickens"!

Years ago when I started with 4 chicks and a duck for our daughter I was told that was enough. That grew to about 50 chickens, 2 peacocks and 4 ducks in a year.
We moved last year and I sold everything. This spring I built a nice new coop and started hatching feaverishly! I only have cochins now and that is all I want but I currently have about 50. There are several I have to get rid of because they just aren't good enough.
So we will see about a new coop in about another year.

As far as a hobby, I must say chicken keeping is not that bad for the spouse. I hated when my husband used to race his road bike, crash and have injuries or need to buy more expensive gear. Once someone that crashed right next to him had to have complete reconstructive surgery on their face after breaking a bunch of bones. Chicken keeping - not so bad.

Can I ask a very ignorant Q? Where did the name Lemon Blues come from as they are so dark? What does an adult LB look like? I was sitting with my chicks the other day and realised I needed to stop reading this site so much as I was mentally chopping up my birds to make a better cochin-"cut off your feet & put them on you"" - move your head to her body" =too much time looking at beautiful cochins on this site!

I have often wondered the same thing. I know in other breeds Lemon Blue isnt a dark blue bird with red/orange hackle, it is a pale blue color with lemon hackle. The birds that are dark bodied with orange/red hackle are Blue Reds. I have wondered why the same isnt for Cochins, but I dont breed them so never mentioned it.

Absolutely correct! All Breeds must adhere to the same Variety description in the Standard.

Regarding Lemon Blue -

As I started my LB project I had many questions about color. From what I've found out, the Lemon part should be a lemony color. Unfortunately, most LB Cochins are somewhat too orange colored rather than lemon. The blue part should be the idea " pigeon" blue per the SOP owns/or Bantam Standard.

Gail is correct in that the color description is mainly defined from the Old English Game standard.

I think the two issues of color - lemon hackles/saddle and medium blue are two very common faults in many current birds.

Thats what I was thinking. I was actually thinking of OEGB when I thought about the two different varieties. Just what you stated above is what I was thinking. I noticed it when I was looking through the SOP and noticed the difference, and similarity.

The issue of the dark blueness I think comes from melanizer genes from either the BR or from the Blue parent in LB matings. I've been test mating my blue foundation birds for both gold and for no melanotic genes for that reason. My results has been, unfortunately Silver Blues so far, but they have good blue coloration. Now if I can just get gold based blue rather than silver!
