Cochin Thread!!!

The issue of the dark blueness I think comes from melanizer genes from either the BR or from the Blue parent in LB matings. I've been test mating my blue foundation birds for both gold and for no melanotic genes for that reason. My results has been, unfortunately Silver Blues so far, but they have good blue coloration. Now if I can just get gold based blue rather than silver!

i think buff has a pheomelanin diluter involved that turns the red/gold paler, maybe you could try incorporating a nice buff for that gene and see what happens?

Genetically the keys to Lemon Blues are the combination of gold birchen (called brown red in Cochins) and gold based proper blue. A gold based nice colored Splash x BR should produce all LB offspring which is the ideal pairing. The lemon coloration is produced by gold genes reduced by the influence of the blue gene. Using these parents the only pitfalls are the Splash being gold based and no melanotic gene ( which is the nice color part above). The partner must be gold birchen (rather than say a gold leaky black) to get the proper lemony placement including the lacing.

I would fear that Buff, being a multiple gene color affect, would chance introducing something like mahogany which would bring the chicks back to an orangish rather than lemon color highlights. An increasingly common pseudo lemon blue can be created with buff x blue, or leaky gold black x blue cross which show the incorrect orange coloration and lack the birchen lacing.

Off the top of my head, I also don't think that buffs are ER based which, if not, may also complicate things genetically as the ideal LB would be ER/ER.

Thoughts, please? I think he's gorgeous, but I am no expert.
Black cockerel hatched (June 2012) from Sue's (Sutillman) eggs. I have more eggs on order!

Can you get a picture that is from the side at chicken level. Trying to evaluate from this angle is difficult. Really like the comb and yellow beak. What is the underfluff color? Bet foot and leg color is very good.

Can I have some critique on him?

One of my family members has him now but I can get him back any time I want. I was thinking about it to breed him to her:

This was taken before she started laying, so she has nicer comb/wattles now.

Underfluff is black and nice yellow feet/legs. I want to redo pics tomorrow - outside. He was to busy trying to keep me in sight and see what I was doing and wasn't cooperating. Plus the batteries were dying in the camera. I'll try to get a better pic tomorrow.

Was the top bird quite young in that picture? Too narrow, low wing carriage, not much cushion, foot color on the darkest side of acceptable, and comb is a little on the large side if I go by that picture. Upside is eye color is good and crisp points on the comb. She appears to be a better bird than him. Enjoy her or them if you decide to get him.

Yes, he was pretty young, about 7 months. I still have the pullet. In fact, she has done the best at shows out of all my birds. I actually won Grand Champion in showmanship at our county fair with her. I'm looking for a nice cockerel to breed her with. Someone told me Dottie Truedson has some really nice Cochins, has anyone heard of her?

As Craig mentioned, its difficult to evaluate him from the pics. He looks to be a pretty good bird, like his overall shape, and his yellow beak and legs/feet. (I noticed he had yellow toes in the second pic.) Should make a nice bird to breed from for sure.
