Cockerel hit by car

I was also freaked out the other day when I saw green skin on his leg above the wound.
Yup, chicken bruises are green.

I’m going into town tomorrow to get some permethrin dust and I’m going to look over all the other birds
Definitely do that......maybe you know, but....

My Bug Check notes:
Have you checked them over real well for mites and/or lice?

Google images of lice/mites and their eggs before the inspection so you'll know what you're looking for.

Part the feathers right down to the skin around vent, head/neck and under wings.

Best done well after dark with a strong flashlight/headlight, easier to 'catch' bird and also to check for the mites that live in structure and only come out at night to feed off roosting birds.

Wipe a white paper towel along the underside of roost to look for red smears(smashed well fed mites).

I’ll be sure to keep note of the colour of chicken bruises from now oh :caf

They definitely are lice. I’ve dealt with an infestation years back on a group of leghorns. Took the whole bunch back to my city house to give them a bath lol. The photos I took aren’t good enough to really see them as they are so blurry but that’s what they are.

The plan is to use the permethrin on Artie since he’s inside and can’t dust bathe to help with bugs and then look over the others and do them if I see any lice on them as well :thumbsup

GO ARTIE, GO!! I imagine he'll favor his hurt leg for some time yet. Those deep bruises & strains take quite a while to heal. The B50 will help with that, for sure.

And I didn't know that chicken bruises were green, either! Frankly I hope to never have to see one on my babies! (They're full grown, but still my babies)

A little update as we have a bunch of pin feathers coming in!! He’s getting around a bit better when I let him out to change the towel, doesn’t just stand there like he had been.

I put mineral oil on the giant scab the other day as it seemed really tight feeling and some was peeling up, I don’t know where it went but it’s been gone and he’s got all those new feathers starting :love

I’m unsure if I mentioned it here, or if it was just to a close friend, but I had found another road rash scab on his tailbone. It’s very tender along with the top of his tailbone.. I’m going to take an educated guess and say the car that hit him went over the right leg (the joint) and his tail going off the damage he received. It might not have gone right over but, that’s where the most damage is done.

didn’t end up finding lice on the other chickens thankfully, I’m taking it as he just hasn’t been able to dust bathe and that’s why they were noticed. Also the fact I’m handling him more than I ever have since he was a little chick

Both areas look great!!
He's eating/drinking/pooping well?
I’m so glad they are looking good to you!!

He’s got the best appetite out of all my birds, competes with my cat on who eats more in a day... luckily she only gets fed twice a day.

He’s pooping very well (all looks normal) and he’s drinking plenty of water as well! Very happy to see me when I get home from work and loves to chat with me when I do. He will crow if I’m home and not in that room because he knows I’ll always go sit with him when he does

:weeGreat news!I saw one of my chickens get hit by a car, wheels missed her but she tumbled around under the car. She came away from it with lots of road rash and a limp, but healed up great.Hope your boy keeps improving!
Yes, good news for BOTH of you!! My heart about stopped just READING that you saw her accident!!

It was years ago but I can still see it like it was yesterday! Great little chicken, had her for a long time! And she was a barred rock!
Ahhh, my favorite breed! To be fair, I haven't met a chicken that I DIDN'T like...but there are a couple of breeds that I wouldn't choose if I had any say in the matter. (I phrase it this way because we all know what happens...one says "I will NEVER.....". Next thing you know, you can, you will, you do and then you suddenly wonder "what the...what??"
