I agree with you. I was hoping one of my first batch of chicks would have a rooster but they all ended up being girls, which I'm happy about but I was making up my mind that either my SLW or my Barred Rock Mixed would be a cockerel. I heard that hens love having a rooster around for protection and safety.

A good rooster, maybe. My hens were happier when the dude went away. He tried his best but he was an Ike sort of rooster... Bared all of their backs and beat up on them when he was displeased. He added more stress than he alleviated.
 
He is a Black Sex Link cockerel or other mix which resulted in having only one barring gene. I have raised BRs for a number of years. The BSL male has only one barring gene, unlike a BR rooster, who always has two barring genes. One barring gene on the male which leads to uneven barring, lots of solid black feathers, more silvery hackles, etc.

This male of mine had only one barring gene-his sire was a Delaware, his mother a pure Barred Rock.
