2 or 3 days ago I noticed that our cockerel began to sit inside the coop near the nesting box when there was a hen already in or not. I don't mind him sitting inside I just want to know why.
I first thought it was because of the rain but I see him sit under the apple trees during the rainfall so it's not because of that.
The hens don't seem to care if he's in there or not but they do scare him out with the egg song.

Thanks in advance for anyone who knows why he's doing this!

I'll get a picture of him inside later after I've had enough Coffee.
Not really a morning person.

Sometimes a cockerel will call hens to what he decides is a good place to lay and even 'show' them by scratching and snuggling into the bedding material the way hens do when they are preparing to lay. He might be thinking he is doing something useful by hanging around in the good spots or he could be just keeping watch of his hens while they do their thing.

He's probably keeping watch like you said. Thanks!

My Naked Neck cockerel, Angus does this.
Except all the places he chooses are entirely inappropriate for egg laying and sometimes ridiculous
My favorite is the blade guard on the lawn tractor
