This isn't a problem...just a curiosity thing. I'm new to raising cockerels and just wondering what is normal and what isn't.
I have a new flock of an older mother hen, her two pullets and her four cockerels. They are 16/17 weeks old. I have had the new flock since Nov. 2nd. They are in their own coop and run. Their run is adjacent to my original flock's run which consists of 6 layers and the cockbird in my avatar. The fence between the runs has silt fence against it so the cock and cockerels cannot see each other.
About 3 weeks ago one cockerel started crowing. He crowed two mornings in a row, then it became random. About a week and a half ago 3 of the 4 cockerels were crowing one morning. That was a one time occurrence. A few days later the first cockerel to crow crowed again one morning... since then it has been silent.
I just assumed when cockerels started crowing they crowed from there on out. Is this normal? Or does consistency increase with age? Could it be because they hear my cockbird in the adjacent run crowing?
*** If it matters at all, the sparing between these cockerels is minimal. What I see is mostly two cockerels having stare-downs with their hackles raised, then one will get bored and walk off. When there is chest bumping and pecking mother hen is quick to break it up.
