We're almost finished building my new chicken coop and I would like to try coffee grounds animal bedding for the poop board covering and maybe as some floor covering. But I'm having trouble finding it available to ship or in-store near me. Could I just order some cheap coffee grounds in bulk on Amazon or does it need to be used coffee grounds that have been dried out? I'm the only one in the house that drinks coffee, so it may take a while to save enough of my used grounds to dry out. (I've never asked a question on here before, only read posts and forums. Sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place.) 🐔🥚😊 💛

I can't tell you how many forums I've read on here about using coffee grounds. Trust me, I've been doing my research LOL
Don't use straight coffee grounds. First, it would be ridiculously expensive. Second, the caffeine content would be too high. And third, the aroma from the fresh ground roasted coffee would irritate the birds delicate respiratory system.

The coffee bedding you are looking for appears to be out of production.

I got a few bags of Starbucks used Grounds for Gardeners and dried it. Or thought I did. The first batch started to get moldy in the storage container and I had to toss what was left. The second batch is nice and dry as it's been in an open container in my garage after a few days being stirred in the blazing hot sun but it's all I have. It was very time consuming to get it dried and I don't have that kind of time so when I've used it up, I'll have little choice but to transition back to PDZ granular form which has, for some reason, become extremely dusty.

Hmmm, my kids and I were just researching coffee plants today. Apparently the caffine is a mild toxin to certain organisms that the plant uses to try to keep it's seeds from being consumed (wow, did that backfire 😅 ).

I have never heard that coffee is specifically toxic to chickens, and you can't assume, but you would definitely want to find out first. There was a good article about what is safe or not safe for chickens on here, I'll see if I can find it.

Sounds like a pro and con of using the coffee grounds. Maybe the PDZ would be better, I figured the coffee grounds would be more cost-efficient.
