RE: Asperger's .. It apparently manifests differently in girls than boys .. That's why it's more frequently diagnosed in boys .. The parents of these boys have it harder, I think.
My DD17 is very smart, makes great grades, is very introverted, social outcast, social phobic, has a hard time making then keeping friends. Is very immature socially, and still obsesses over stuffed animals, online forums, drawing, reading, etc.
Someone steered me toward Asperger's and I've discovered other traits that are similar: Poor hygeine habits, wearing and sleeping in the same clothes day in and day out unless I make her bathe and change, Poor eating habits .. she eats very FEW things .. mostly because of "texture" issues .. And I've just this week discovered her repetative self-stimulating behavior (besides rocking) ..
She is college bound (on SAT scores alone) and I hope I have discovered this in time to get her some counselling and coping skills so that she can go on to be the next Bill Gates, Picasso, Mozart, or Albert Einstein. (Funny, we've always called her our little Einstein.)
She's still on the fence about it, but it has to be somewhat shocking to hear that your mom thinks you are autistic ..
But it is manageable .. so we'll do what we have to do.
Thanks.
