Good morning People,
I hope this finds everyone doing well and enjoying the last bit of summer. We were down along the Jersey coast visiting my sister the last couple of days. Her last son is off to college this weekend. I tried my hand at crabbing (the hard shell kind - blue crabs). I do enough of the other kind of "crabbing". We came home with 16 one morning and had ourselves a good meal. I prefer soft shell crabs tho. A lot of hand picking for the little bit of meat.

osedog: That cake and cupcakes do look good. A nice gallon of coffee to go along with them, and I'd be a happy camper till the dr found out.

math ace: what have you been up to?

chicks: work going good for you and how's your little man doing?

Karl & Rancher: Keep up the good work of tormenting your better halves.

Enjoy the day

Where do I start?

It has been the busiest few months of my life!

Dad is still with us. His Alziemers is advancing quickly. We live in a world where QUICK mood changes are the norm. He has had adverse reactions to almost every drug they have tried him on.
EVERY SINGLE DAY is a WILD roller coaster wild with him. We are averaging 2 doctor visits a week. This week there are 3 visits

I am grateful for whatever I can get done each day in between mood swings, general confusion, and doctor visits!

Dh and I have built two new coops over the last few months. I have someone who comes in and sits with dad one day a weekend so that Dh and I can get outside for yard work and chicken work.

Dh rototilled a new area for additional garden space. We have ran irrigation to it and I have it planted for the fall already. I've got some reall good looking squah, green bean, and corn plants in it.
Speaking of gardens, I have learned how to can all the things I am growing.

In the last few months, I have processed about ......

20 quarts of spiced pears,
40 jelly jars of jam - - blueberry and blackberry
40 pints of salsa
12 Quarts of green beans
6 pints of sweet banana pepper rings or hot pepper relish.
6 pints of summer squash
4 pints of carrots

As of last night, I have learned how to make egg bread and yeast rolls from scratch - - - Excellent looking and tasting!
WOW, I wish I had taken a picture of them last night.

They had three weeks of the band camp from he** this summer. OMG, I am so glad it is over. My children started high school this year. The transition is going well so far

So now, Quercus21 are you sorry you asked ? ? ?

Morning People,
I trust everyone is doing good and preparing or surviving Irene. I am sipping on some nice India Monsoon Malibar coffee.

Math Ace: Sounds like you are keeping busy and no grass is going to grown underfoot. I gave up on our garden this year. I am going to make raised beds next year. It was soggy right up till the mid to end of June. How do your pear come out? Are they still somewhat firm? I did apples last year and they were border line ready for sauce (mushy).

Enjoy the day

Good morning chicken wranglers
Q thanks for reminding me to irritate Deb tonight,Rancher did you teach any of those kids to crochet? Maybe a bridge to the promised land?
Math ace good work "and Plenty of it "!
My Niece from Hi. was here last night with her fiance,It was nice to meet him.He is a sailor and being transfered to San Diego on corronado Isle.
We visited and ate brats and corn on the cob it was plesant!
Ya'll let me know whats up in your lives ya hear!
God Bless!

Goodness you are BUSY, Math Ace! Hang in there. I'm giving corn another shot this year, but it is multi-colored mini popcorn ears. Just for FUN! They are coming up really quickly in the little seed starters - I have so many I think I'll sell a few at the swap next weekend.
Does this look like a BC Marans to you, Math Ace? :

(the dark one on the left - I thought I had uploaded a better picture, sorry - the feathering is almost partridge looking from neck to back, with that white under her neck)

I swear I've had the worst hatching experience. Three chicks aren't what they were sold as, two crippled ones that didn't make it, one that died of unknown causes, and out of 35 or 40 eggs, I hatched 8 and it looks like I only got TWO PULLETS!!!

Anyway, yesterday was a bit crazy around here and I'm hoping today will be a better one for the kids. Later I have to drive around some less than desirable areas to track down kids that haven't shown up for school yet. I don't actually mind doing that - it's nice to get out of the building for a bit.
Sounds like a lovely evening, Karl. I'd like to try some of that coffee, Quercus - it sounds delicious!
Hope Irene doesn't hit any of you up there!

I don't see anything that would make be think that it is not a BCM..... Why are you questioning him ( her)?

I am right there with you on worse hatching experience. After dad broke my incubator, I bought a new one. I have ran two complete hatches in it and have not been happy.
This last time I had it packed with eggs.... 42 eggs. Then I candled and removed about 10 - - - A whole row was bad ( second time in a row that a whole row has been bad

)
Then we went into lockdown. I hatched - - - 10 chicks. We had two with deformed legs and had to cull them. Now we have 8 left. Three were BCM and two are males for sure. The third one might still be a male! The other 5 were delawares.....

The last batch of delawares I hatched - - - 6 chicks and only one was a pullet!

I've got 5 delawares this time and there had better be some girls in there or else

I do have a broody sitting on some eggs outside. Maybe she will do a better job at it than I did!
