Color genetics thread.

Splash is not white. Splash is the result of two blue dilute genes. Blues only have a single copy of the blue dilute gene. Your rooster is Blue, therefore only has one copy of the gene to pass. Blue/Splash is a dilute for black pigment. White is a gene that removes black pigment. Two very different genes at work.

Hmm... so what color would the babies be if I bred splash to white?

How did I get this color from the two below???? It doesn't look like blue, wheaten or even red to me.

Pure True Wheaten Ameraucana mixed with an F1 Splash Ameraucana/ French Splash Marans

The mixed breed hen must be carrying a bunch of hidden pattern genes. The wheaten of the Ameraucana is very recessive, just about every other pattern gene is dominant over it. The chick will likely be similar to most Easter Eggers, with a 'wild-type' partridge patterning.

black x white = black

blue x white= some black and some blue
Assuming the Black or Blue is not carrying a copy of recessive white

The chicks look as if it has a down color characteristic of chickens that are brown at the E locus. Sometimes a birchen/wheaten heterozygote will look like the brown down. My prediction is that it will both be a basic black color with some red showing. I am going with birchen, wheaten heterozygotes for the E locus.

What would crossing a partridge cochin bantam to a silver penciled cochin bantam produce? Someplace I read & don't recall where that it would result in both patterns?

These are my 2 girls & my boy. All are 6 months. I'm not planning on letting any hatching happen before a year old. But I want to learn. I know they aren't the best, but it's what I've got so I can learn & develop from them.

Thanks! I've several cockerels & need to narrow down. I've a birchen, blue, black & white Cochin bantams too. Plus bantam buff Brahma & 3 oegb bantams. Those are all the same age. An older d'uccle-Cochin mix roo that's a project mille Fleur. Also for cresteds crevecoeur, white crested black, & white crested red laced polish. I do have more girls. Somehow I've ended up with rare-not common varities. Which I'm liking so that makes it harder to cull!
