Color genetics thread.

I have noted that the blue gene has been described as a dominant gene on this thread. The blue gene is not dominant but incompletely dominant. If the blue gene was dominant, then one blue allele would cause a genetically black chicken to be a splash phenotype. The blue allele by itself can not make a bird splash therefore, the blue gene is not dominant.

Wow, this makes my head spin! I actually asked some questions on the board about this type of thing but in another area - general questions!

I get blue, black and splash pretty good but then lost.

But what happens if I Put a BLRW or a Splash of this color over a White Wyandotte?

I also asked about Orpingtons but had a wonderful poster address that though it did not say anything about solid colors hiding some barring effects.

The next crosses don't matter so much as they will be meat birds but if some of the crosses cause auto sector chicks that would be wonderful and help me separate so they grow better.

I am doing some pure barred rocks but not enough hens to supply our very large family with the birds we will need for meat, so other crosses are:

Barred rock rooster over white Wyandottes (whose parents are both white Wyandottes)

Barred rock rooster over light Sussex hens

Barred rock rooster over BLRW hens

Barred rock rooster over Black or Blue Maran hens ( mostly black copper though)

A barred rock rooster will have 100% barred offspring.

for sex links, the hens need to be barred so that all of the sons will have a spot on the heads when they hatch. Sons will feather out to be barred and daughters will not.

Okay so because he is barred then all are barred no matter what he breeds! The only way is would be different is putting the other said breeds as roosters over barred hens then you get sex linked chicks?
I know I breeder I got some eggs from said to put a light Sussex rooster over barred hens and then you have different coloured chicks females from males.... But this does not work the opposite way around?
Sigh, to bad! Want the barred rock rooster over since he it the largest of the rooster breeds!

Any ideal what a BLRW Roo or BLRW Splash Roo over White Wyandotte hens will produce?

White in Wyandottes is usually recessive. When crossed with other varieties or breeds, they breed like a solid black bird. Crossed with a splash bird, expect solid Blue chicks. Males may develop red leakage as the mature.

Okay one more question of the barred rock Roo over the Wyandottes----since the barred rock coloring just take over is there any chance the Wyandottes comb will show through so I can distinguish that cross over any other barred cross or the pure barred rocks?

The rose comb of the Wyandotte is dominant over the single comb of the Rocks.
