Color genetics thread.

Yes, sorry my fault I meant to say extended black. Lots of whirling states in my head. So I am guessing she had a black hen but it only carried one extended black gene which she found out by breeding to a non black chicken and got a different color. But she still could have gotten an all black chicken because it only needs on gene but in this case was one of those time it decided to show itself!

Okay scrap this thought I I just saw her post and it was a splash hen! Now confused! I will reread and reread her post to figure out the hidden black gene!

you got it! It is a crazy puzzle for sure.

Only, the chick's mother was a splash (black plus two genes that change the black to a sort of Dalmatian look). technically still black though, so you are right. You are doing great.

When I first started learning I nagged these guys with every question in the book so don't feel bad!

Simple. The hen had a single extended black gene, making her Black. She also had two copies of the Blue dilute gene. Two blue genes makes a black bird Splash.

Okay I guess when I look at my splashes they are mostly white with the tiniest amount of black or bluish(to the eyes) grey in them! So I would never thought of them as black!

So I was not picturing a hen that is black with a bit of white as splashes!

Then of course I do have to Orpington hens that are black with just a few feathers of white which is called molted. So I guess if I saw a black bird with a bit of white I would call them molted but this must get deeper than that then!

Oh and just for a little relaxer break and eye candy here is my little Cochin bantam mix! So pretty and unpredictable coloured!

Hmm can't figure how to post a picture from my photos!

I think you missed the concept completely.
Try to follow me on this. Splash is two copies of Blue dilute gene. Blue dilutes black. One blue gene dilutes black to shades of grey. Two copies dilutes black even more, producing white/pale grey with darker flecks. The effects of the Blue gene are not dependant on whether or not a bird is pure for extended black.

So chicken5555 what did you think you were going to have for a chick?

Well, since the mother is black and has 2 copies of blue (making her splash), I was expecting the chick to be black with one copy of blue from the mom + one copy of wheaten from the dad. Since wheaten is recessive to black, the chick should have been blue. But... now I know that the hen only has one black gene LOL
