My thoughts are that it is something in your space, whether being brought in from the main coop or in the box or it just is. When the little ones get sick, they are unable to fight off the cocci and also the bigger chickens will have issues with cocci when they are sick as well. Are you using medicated feed? I really hate that word medicated when it comes to chick starter as it gives the wrong impression. If a chick is sick, it won't be eating as much and so even the feed won't work against cocci.
Virus aka cold, antibiotics won't help unless there is an underlying bacterial infection, treat symptoms for support
Bacterial - antibiotics will help, usually needed asap
Cocci- treat with Corrid or such
Once you do the antibiotics, treat with probiotics to help get their system back.
It seems that you did the right thing in giving the amprolium It gave the chick a chance to fight off whatever is going on without dealing with cocci on top of it. Good luck, sounds like you are doing everything right.

So sorry

Alright, I know I would probably get better answers from the sick help forum but want to post something real quick.
My chicks are about a week old. Monday night one was looking not right. Last year I had real bad luck with what seemed like any chick I got. I think in total it was 5 of them that died on me. All different places of purchase, all different batches and all exhibited the same behavior heavy breathing and a rasp. I thought maybe cocci so treated the surviving one with powder amprolium and it lived. Flash forward to Monday and I see those same signs in one of my new chicks. I ended up treating the water with the medication and Tuesday morning she's breathing normal and has since. Never really saw any bloody stool in any of them, this year or last.

Here are a few YouTube videos. Anything that looks like cocci? Something else. Worrying too much?

Sorry I cannot view those videos for whatever reason. How are things now and was the breathing issue the only symptom? What does there droppings look like? Have you found any bloody droppings, usually a sign of Cocci.

I have a book called "The Complete Herbal Handbook for Farm and Stable," by Juliette de Bairacli Levy. Here is what the book says about Coci and symptoms...
Symptoms: Faltering gait, anemic comb, mucus at corners of eyes, general debility. The chicks produce blood-stained droppings and usually show reached backs.

Treatment: Gice garlic, either one flaked clove, continue for 10 days. Garlic is also an important preventative of this disease and will check infections in pens...

In case of severe exhaustion give drops of warmed honey, it is an immediate restorative.

Are you getting your chicks from a breeder or where are you getting them from?

As for raw garlic, it is a great preventative for several diseases and worms. After feeding it to the flock make sure you boost their good gut bacteria with a probiotic yogurt or such. The most important thing to keeping healthy chickens is by keeping their intestinal track healthy and full of good bacteria. It is perhaps the most overlooked aspect of chicken keeping that many owners just skip. Check out the Natural Chicken Keeping thread for other great advice and preventives, one of my favorite threads.

I know that all the talk has been about a sick chick, and my best show bird hasn't drank since we got there, expect when I tried to do the force drink and she got a bit, the main reason I am worried is she is the only one I have trained to do a main youth thing with show
