wsmith, work for WM. At least once a week have to run out to the other location off Hwy 94 - was there today in fact.

So, I have to ask, are turkeys as ... simple as I keep hearing they are? I go back and forth about whether to try a couple of turkeys and/or ducks next year, just saw an ad on Craigslist the other day for "Miniature White Turkeys" - is there really such a thing? First I've heard of them, but I have been away from poultry a long time so no surprise, really. I only ever had some egglayers before, that was the goal this time around with the bonus of bug consumption, but I have been told Turkeys are champion grasshopper eaters, and ducks eat bugs and weeds without disturbing the plant you are trying to grow. This year it's only a few tomato, pepper and squash plants, grasshoppers decimated every seedling I got to sprout, and after the second time I gave up and decided it was time to have chickens again. Funny thing is, by the time I actually acquired the chickens, two pairs of robins raising young nearby had nearly wiped out the grasshoppers :)

Ducks are messy. I wanted them for the eggs to bake with and now wish I would have went with turkeys instead. My ducks are adorable but I dread the water changes in the winter.

Have to buy feed this afternoon. Bracing myself for sticker shock again........

Beth slept all night and was much better early this morning that she was last night. This is good.

Glad she slept better last night.

wow, I haven't checked-in in a while.

wsmith, my thoughts are with you and Beth.

pichuris, I'm in Strasburg too, about 2 miles east of town. :)

I've been busy the last few days with a bunch of chickies. One of my meaties has gotten sick with some respiratory issue. Duramycin seems to be kicking it in the toosh, *crossing my fingers this goes away quickly*. My daughter and I went to Big R looking for the Duramycin, and accidentally came home with 6 birthday present chicks instead (4 turkens and 2 unknown, probably BRs). My broody's eggs have all hatched. I'm a grandma now! I've been hovering like crazy, just waiting for them to finish. Start to finish the three babies took about 36 hours. I had to help the last one a little bit this morning because it was getting shrink wrapped. Thankfully a little bit of warm water and pulling back a little of the dried sac was all I had to do. Now I have to go clean all the chicken crap out of litter boxes. The sure do poop alot.

Well, it wasn't too bad at Big R today. Picked up two #50 bags of all flock, and a #50 bag of cracked corn. I have some whole wheat that I will mix with it 50/50. This was recommended by some old time breeders of Dominique's, so I will try it. My chickens don't eat the milo that commercial scratch mixes are loaded with.

I have been out of pocket for more than a week. My 86 YO mother came out from CA and I took some time to drive her around the state a little seeing the sites. I think I enjoyed it more than she did, SIGH. At her age she's just not impressed by much. My dad and she spent the first 15 years of their retirement traveling and living in an 8 ft camper. My dad was an amateur photographer and she was his 'spotter'. She was happy to find out that she hadn't lost her skills as she called out....."STOP, there's a new flower, there's some kinda animal, etc, etc. So the travel was slow but we weren't in any hurry.

Wendell, sorry to hear Beth was in the hospital, glad she's out and doing better than she was. Tell her I'm praying 'specifically' for her. Hopefully that will have meaning to her. God does have a plan, it's just unfortunate that it doesn't always conform with our plans, wants and wishes. I will add to that with prayers for you and your family also.

Let me know when/if you'd like some more garden goodies. My squash is running amok this year and I have more spaghetti squash, beets and carrots than I know what to do with. Well, I know what to do, just haven't had the time or inclination to start canning.

gardendufus (lol love the moniker!) I discovered that my girls have a fondness for almost anything I harvest and don't want to take the time to cook or preserve. This week they have dined on summer squash, zucchini, and a few tomatoes that were just not going to be eaten before they passed usefulness. Red peppers that are hot, they don't really want to eat, but they do want to be first to snatch them up and play keep-away :) I also thawed and served them some pumpkin I cooked and froze last year because I could not bring myself to waste it, even though it isn't something I use very much, and the Sussex Sisters practically inhaled it. They weren't as sure of the Spaghetti Squash, but it disappeared all the same. They now expect some sort of fresh food morning and evening and don't consume very much crumble at all, although I'm sure as the season winds down they will have to eat more crumble. I have yet to offer them any type of scratch, and am seeking input on whether it's a good idea to offer some cracked corn and maybe oats and wheat. I am inclined to mix something myself, or ask Sweeny's to mix it for me, but want to have something they think of as YUMMY once I don't have as much to offer in the way of fresh vegetables.

Coloradogal, do ducks need, like, a wading pool of water changed daily, or will a smaller vessel do in winter? I can imagine it is not a lot of fun either way during the coldest days of winter. Do they at least lay enough eggs to supply your baking? Are turkey eggs good for baking as well? I have heard about duck eggs, but nothing about turkey eggs.

Wendell, a good night's sleep makes such a difference, anytime really but especially when ill, I am glad to hear Beth had one.

Sweet someone a hop skip and away. The Duramycin you can get at Omalleys. They actually carry quite a bit of chicken stuff then other places.

Yeah, O'malleys is great. My dad has known the owners for a really, REALLY long time. He was a purina driver for them and delivered the first purina loads to the current location. I had to go to Parker, and decided to come the back way home through Elizabeth and Kiowa because it's faster than the regular (free) routes at rush hour. So I stopped at big R on the way home.
