So, I have to ask, are turkeys as ... simple as I keep hearing they are? I go back and forth about whether to try a couple of turkeys and/or ducks next year, just saw an ad on Craigslist the other day for "Miniature White Turkeys" - is there really such a thing? First I've heard of them, but I have been away from poultry a long time so no surprise, really. I only ever had some egglayers before, that was the goal this time around with the bonus of bug consumption, but I have been told Turkeys are champion grasshopper eaters, and ducks eat bugs and weeds without disturbing the plant you are trying to grow. This year it's only a few tomato, pepper and squash plants, grasshoppers decimated every seedling I got to sprout, and after the second time I gave up and decided it was time to have chickens again. Funny thing is, by the time I actually acquired the chickens, two pairs of robins raising young nearby had nearly wiped out the grasshoppers
I also thawed and served them some pumpkin I cooked and froze last year because I could not bring myself to waste it, even though it isn't something I use very much, and the Sussex Sisters practically inhaled it. They weren't as sure of the Spaghetti Squash, but it disappeared all the same. They now expect some sort of fresh food morning and evening and don't consume very much crumble at all, although I'm sure as the season winds down they will have to eat more crumble. I have yet to offer them any type of scratch, and am seeking input on whether it's a good idea to offer some cracked corn and maybe oats and wheat. I am inclined to mix something myself, or ask Sweeny's to mix it for me, but want to have something they think of as YUMMY once I don't have as much to offer in the way of fresh vegetables.

I've been busy the last few days with a bunch of chickies. One of my meaties has gotten sick with some respiratory issue. Duramycin seems to be kicking it in the toosh, *crossing my fingers this goes away quickly*. My daughter and I went to Big R looking for the Duramycin, and accidentally came home with 6 birthday present chicks instead (4 turkens and 2 unknown, probably BRs). My broody's eggs have all hatched. I'm a grandma now! I've been hovering like crazy, just waiting for them to finish. Start to finish the three babies took about 36 hours. I had to help the last one a little bit this morning because it was getting shrink wrapped. Thankfully a little bit of warm water and pulling back a little of the dried sac was all I had to do. Now I have to go clean all the chicken crap out of litter boxes.
Yeah, O'malleys is great. My dad has known the owners for a really, REALLY long time. He was a purina driver for them and delivered the first purina loads to the current location. I had to go to Parker, and decided to come the back way home through Elizabeth and Kiowa because it's faster than the regular (free) routes at rush hour. So I stopped at big R on the way home.
