Hi Everyone.
I think I have my first broody. I have some questions for you OT's.
Is it too early for a broody? Should I try to discourage her? I know nothing about hatching eggs. If I do let her brood, what do you all think of getting some day old chicks for her in a few weeks instead of trying to hatch eggs? I think I would prefer this, if I could get pullets and not have to deal with roosters.
I have removed her from the nest a few times over the last three days and she eats and drinks but goes right back to her nest. She only has one wooden egg now.
What do you all think I should do?
Oh, she is a Welsummer who is only about 10 months old.
THanks.

thanks margie,I bet you could give her some real eggs to set, like from the grocery, and mark them and change them out before they go bad, and then after 21days or so, put babies under her at night and I bet she would love it. But be ready to brood them in case of rejection or poor mothering skills. I had a broody raise chicks and it was awesome watching her raise them.
thanks margie,
can I just use wooden eggs to do that or do I need real eggs? I am really tempted to try this...I would love to hear more thoughts and any one with experience doing this...placing chicks with a broody.

Does anyone know anyone in Colorado who has bantam Araucana/Americana/Easter Eggers? I want to add some green egg layers to my flock of banties, thought I'd try to find some locally instead of ordering from a hatchery.
know anyone like thatI had another thought - maybe you can get a few fertile eggs from someone local who wants cockerels to raise for meat, with a breed that can be identified as to gender at hatch, or who will take all the males at whatever age they are identifiable, and let her hatch them?
