Pozees,
Do you know when the Urch order is coming in yet? Sorry if you have said, or if you don't even know yet. Don't mean to bug you. Just curious.
Thanks.

I have not been notified yet, but expect late March. I emailed him to inquire about an additional earlier order to accommodate someone who wants chicks sooner, and so far have not had a response, and haven't had the time to call during the hours he is available for calls. Our framer is pulling up right now to fix the doorways so will be out watching, taking pics, and hoping for the best.

I am looking at putting together another order for mid march. I keep debating going for Marans but I would have to charge more for them, or Orphingtons, cheaper but maybe common on the market. What do you guys think? I am still trying to feel out the local chick market.

Also if you are looking at ordering chicks next month and want to add into my order let me know. Nothing is set so...

Wanted to show you an idea I am trying out.
My coop has a suggested 8 bird maximum. But I am
now up to 9 chickens (4 are still young and are small).
Currently I have a hanging water bucket, a feeder, and 2
nesting boxes inside the coop. So there wasn't a lot of
area for the birds to walk around inside the coop. I went
to Walmart and bought a big rubber maid tub, had hubby
drill a hole in the side and placed pine shavings and the
old nesting boxes inside, and now the girls are laying in
it. It freed up tons of room inside the coop! Plus it's more
private and way easier to collect the eggs

Chick,
I would pay $12 if I could get a pullet and not have to deal with roos, yes. I bought 4 five month old Welsummers from someone in CS last fall for $15 each and was thrilled to get them. I would have paid $20. They were just hatchery birds too. But raised out, pullets and ready to lay.
I can't remember exactly how much the birds are from Urch, but if memory serves, it is $8 or $9 a bird for day old, straight run. I am hoping for good quality birds, but after I get rid of the roos they will cost me upwards to $20 each. More to POL.

Let me add one more thing; before I got those 4 Wellsummer from someone in CS I bought 5 straight run (that's the only way they sold them) Welsummers from Randel Burke. 4 turned out to be roos. That ONE pullet Welsummer cost me almost $50. I wsaid I would never do that again, and I put in the Urch order. I hope I get at least 3 pullets out of the 7 birds I ordered
If not I won't order straight run ever again...for me...a bird in the hand for $20 to $30 is worth any number in the bush.

Chick- I would be interested in BCMarans too. Are you sure of the availability? I have been checking a lot of the sites and they seem to be hard to get. Wendy

I found silver cuckoo Marans pullets available next month. I looked everywhere for BCMs but they are sold out of pullets for the season already. They actually priced the chicks nicely but the shipping shocked my socks off compared to other places.
